Manville was founded in 1790 by Nicholas Manville and his wife Martha. The Manvilles were the first white family to settle in what is now New Jersey. They operated a bakery and grocery store on the corner of Second and Market Streets until 1873, when they sold their business to John J. McNamara. In 1898, McNamara built the Donaldson-McNamara company factory in Manville. The company produced locomotives, carriages, trucks, buses and other transportation products for local municipalities and businesses until its closure in 1984.
