Manville was a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–Fort Lee, NJ–PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Manville is located on Route 9 south of Uniontown and east of White Sands Lake. The area that would become Manville was first settled by English colonists in 1670. The town was named for John ManVILLE, an early settler. In 1795, the boundaries of the township were enlarged to include what are now matching portions of Camden and Fort Lee townships as well as portions of Burlington Township and Monmouth County. In 1814, Manville became the site of one of four battles between American and British forces during the War for Independence. For three days from May 10-12th (the day before Yorktown), large numbers of men from both sides fought in front of and around town square. A total Of 122 casualties were reported including 21 Americans killed or mortally wounded while 74 British soldiers were also killed or wounded; this battle is considered to be one of the decisive engagements in the war. In 1845, steamboats started playing a major role in shipping goods through Monmouth Creek which then ran directly through downtown Manville unloading on either side of Market Street near where present-day Third Street meets Second Street (now called Main Street). At this time there were no streets or even sidewalks – boats would dock at public wharves and carry off their cargo ashore where it could be unloaded onto wagons pulled by horses or carts for transportation to local stores or markets across Monmouth County countryside. By 1865 steamboats had stopped running through Monmouth Creek altogether because they became too dangerous due to rapids above the creek bed caused by heavy rains during winter months when water levels below ground increased dangerously high! It wasn’t until after World War II that new transportation methods began emerging such as buses which made traveling easier and more affordable than ever before making Manville an even more popular destination with tourists who enjoyed its beautiful scenery along with its wealthof history!
Manville was founded in 1795 by Anthony Manville. The town was named for Anthony Manville, who had purchased a tract of land in the area from the Lenape people. The town is located on the border of Middlesex and Sussex counties. The first store in ManVILLE opened its doors in 1800. In 1801, the first post office was established in ManVILLE. In 1814, manville became part of Burlington County and thus lost its independence. In 1863, the township changed its name to West Milford Township and regained its independency. In 1903, West Milford Township amalgamated with neighboring East Milford Township to form East Brunswick Township. In 1960, it merged with Parsippany Township to form Parsippany-Westmorland Township.
