Manville is a small town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Passaic Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Manville area was first settled in 1714 by Pieter de Hoogh and Johannes Brouwer. The name "Manville" was derived from the French word "Mansfield". In 1801, John Dormon purchased land here from the Moravian church for £5 per acre. Here he erected a mill known as Dormon's Mill which continued to operate until 1827. In 1870, General James Longstreet arrived in Manville with his corps of cavalry to help suppress a slave revolt on Long Island Sound. He took up residence at Noe's House (now home of Borough President Corey Booker) and during his stay made many friends here among the local farmers and fishermen who shared in his bounty hunting activities. Dormon donated land to build what would become Fort Lafayette Park in 1912 and named it after him. In 1924, Fort Lafayette Park became home to Manville High School which helped spur development around it including the construction of several churches and other buildings over the years including one now used as an emergency room at Weequahic Hospital. Borough President Corey Booker was born here on December 12th, 1994

Manville is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,822 at the 2010 census. Manville is the county seat of Hunterdon County and home to the New Jersey State Capitol. The Town of Manville was incorporated on February 3, 1795 by an act of the New Jersey General Assembly as one of four towns formed in Hunterdon Township (now part of Union City). On May 14, 1802, it annexed the boroughs of Holmdel and Brickley. The name "Manville" first appeared on maps in 1796 when Amos Manville platted what is now known as Main Street in what is now part of town. The original manor house still stands and can be seen from many places within town including Center Square where the original courthouse stood until 1945. On October 1, 1824, Manor Township was divided into two parts - Hunterdon Township (now part of Union City) and Northampton Township (now part of Vineland). Northampton Township became known as Southwick because that's where Samuel Southwick located his estate which included much land near present-day Edison Avenue and Park Avenue in central Manville. In 1827, both Southwick and Manor were sold to John J. Ferris who renamed them West Eggerstown after his farmstead east of the Delaware River near Eggerstown Creek (near Morris Plains). In 1839–1840 Ferris constructed a toll road through town linking West Eggerstown with Newark via Bordentown before terminating at Princeton Junction west of Morristown. At this point traffic stopped getting downriver so ferries had to turn around at Bordentown to get back upriver again In December 1850 John Waddell purchased all but 2 acres including Main Street from Amos Manville for $1 ($ today), making him sole owner/operator thereof for over 50 years until his death on October 21st 1902 aged 86 years old – thus becoming one half-owner with John Mennen who founded Mennen’s Store next door on Enterprise Road adjacent to modern day School field which officially opened its doors on January 5th 1903 also becoming one half-owner with Waddell himself soon thereafter constituting three quarters ownership thereby forming a quadrilateral arrangement whereby each individual has majority ownership interest therein except for Mr./Ms./Dr., who are only minority owners/operators thereof having no vote whatsoever regarding major decisions affecting either property or operations without formal consent from all co-owners; yet they are always consulted during any merger negotiations or acquisitions thereto! On November 29th 1914 during World War I munitions producers Fitzpatrick Bros., Incorporated merged with Bethlehem Steel Company forming Bethlehem Steel Corporation ultimately owning more than 100% interest therein although employees were paid out their entire share plus accrued vacation days immediately upon merger announcement; management continued operating under separate names until 1919 when production was transferred from Bethlehem Steel Corporation's gas works located northbound along Orange Avenue across Market Street cornering Fishkill Creek towards Glassboro then southbound along Route 710 past Canandaigua Lake finally disbanding therefrom following regulatory approval by state government however continuing operations thenceforth as Borough Employees Local No 434000000000100 which later became East Rutherford Borough Government entity effective December 25th 1969!!! This event forever changed commercial center & industrial area formerly known as “Bethlehem Steel Corp…. Old Terminal Warehouse Complex… Factory Yards” due primarily to new steel plant being built nearby(southwest side)zynga development commenced shortly thereafter concurrent with steel industry growth nationally notwithstanding numerous other local businesses situated within walking distance including Macy’s Department Stores (& adjacent Army Ammunition Plant) whose closure occurred prior thereto causing significant retail losses resultant!!
Manville was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Manville. It became a borough in 1834 and was incorporated as a city in 1912.
