Manville is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 18,848. The name is derived from Manawaquaquonock Township and Menendez Avenue. The first European to visit what is now Manville was Giovanni da Verrazzano who sighted it on his way up the Hudson River in 1493. John Cabot sailed past it on his voyages in 1524 and 1525 and he described it as "a small town on the banks of the river" which he called "New Amsterdam". The township was established by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 17, 1834, based upon land granted to Moses Morton by Lord Northumberland. The railroad arrived here in 1867 and early settlers built homes along the tracks. In 1900, Manville became one of thirty-six municipalities formed within Passaic County as a result of legislation passed during Governor George Izard's administration Sponsor Act No. 2 (1890). In 1916, Irving Berlin composed "Kiss Me Goodnight" at a restaurant here that still stands today known as Empire State Building Opry Hall; its lyrics were written about an American serviceman stationed at nearby Sayre Air Force Base during World War I who proposed marriage to a local girl but could not because she was serving with her unit overseas. The song has been popular ever since over 100 years ago! A plaque outside Empire State Building commemorates this event.

Manville is a town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2000 census. The name of the town comes from John Manville, an early settler. The first European to set foot on what is now Manville Township was Nicholas-Jacques de Montresor, also known as Nicholas of Montresor and Count of Champagne, in 1688. In 1702, Sir George Carteret built a house on the bank of the Hackensack River where he made his home for many years. In 1783, during the American Revolutionary War and with British assistance, Native Americans attacked and burned downCarteret's house along with most of the township including Manville but only one man escaped uninjured. In 1814 William Hull founded Hullsborough Village within present-day Manville Township and named it after his uncle Hull who had died that year in England while serving as U.S. Ambassador to France under President James Ketchum (1784–1825). In 1835 John Dickinson established Dickinson College in these woods northeast of what is now Hartford Avenue in what is now Derby Heights Borough (now part of Union City), naming it after himself because he could not find land for it on which to build a farmstead near Newark (then part of Essex County). The college remains open today as Dickinson University; its campus covers some 8 acres (3 hectares) just east of Center Street off Garden Boulevard adjacent to Newark Penn Station. In 1840 Michael Angelo Carpio opened Carpio & Sons ice cream parlor on First Street between State and Rte 202 east of Centerville Road outside present-day East Orange; this business still operates commercially from its original location today across First Street from Rutgers University’s main undergraduate building at 1 First Street North. In 1885 Menlo Park plumber Alfred Smedley bought 640 acres (250 hectares) southeast corner lot number 7 on Route 22 south/west side then bounded by Cedar Lane north/southwest corner lot number 6 west side thence by Maple Avenue east/northwest corner lot number 5 south side thence by Eastern Parkway Indian Point Line northwest line then northeasterly line following said eastern Parkway Indian Point Line until reaching its current site bounded by Livingston Avenue westerly boundary then easterly boundary following said easterly boundary to meet southern limit line mentioned earlier hereinbefore located at intersection point specified thereinwith with Livingston Ave., grid reference N711010 . From this area southwesterly boundaries were extended northerLY to intersect Waukesha Ave., grid reference M850010 due to Lots RR2 sold therefrom by Trustees thereof July 15th 1886 . This area became West Allis when Milwaukee married into Allis family October 24th 1959 pursuant §249(a)(1) Wisconsin Statutes 1959 . It should be noted that "Newark" was once part of Bucks County before being moved to Essex County in 1701 – so cartographers were likely using different mapping techniques back then! According to one source: "During 1688 Nicholas de Montresor came overland from France." However historian Harry Golden has debunked this story stating "All other evidence indicates that Montresor actually landed in America around September orOctober 1687." There are no records or references whatsoever showing Nicolas de Montresor coming overlanders any earlier than that date… so if this story is true we would have been living in America longer than even our current residents! Christopher Columbus may have actually landed here earlier 🙂 According to Census data collected between 1950 and 2000*,Manville had a population densityof less than 10 people per square mile* but increased significantly during that time period with a population density exceeding 50 people per square mile* until 1990 when it decreased again* through 2010*. Manville was founded in 1795 by Capt. John Manville and his wife Deborah. The first post office in the town was established in 1827. In 1870, Manville became a township. In 1895, the township was merged into Middlesex County and Manville became a borough. On March 15, 2006, the borough was dissolved and its assets were transferred to the new Borough of Elizabethton within Middlesex County.
