The first European settlement in what is now Manville was made by English settlers under the name of "Manchester" on March 12, 1664. The first municipal meeting took place on July 5, 1669 and an act to incorporate as a borough was passed on October 15th that same year. On December 20th 1802 it became an official city with 2,000 residents. On May 4th 1898 Manville lost its charter as a city because it failed to raise enough money for incorporation within six months of its establishment. However, it regained its charter four days later and has remained an independent municipality ever since. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough had a total area of , all of which is land. As of the 2010 census there were 9,731 people living in Manville Borough who were eligible to vote – 7% of the entire population over 21 years old residing in NJ!
