In 1681, the Dutch captain Cornelis Morin anchored his ship "Nieuwkomer" here while exploring the Delaware River and its tributaries. He built a small fortification here and called it Fort Amsterdam because he believed that Amsterdam would be the next colonial capital of New Netherland. In 1717, John Montresor acquired land north of town from Nicholas de Vries for £10 per acre (approximately $ ). Montresor founded Manville Township on this land in 1721 and named it for himself and his wifeatherine (née van der Valk). During World War I, Manville served as a hospital for troops wounded or lost in action over on both sides at the front lines in Europe. On October 9, 1918, General Motors Corporation's new assembly plant began operations at nearby Essex Place near where today's Lincoln Financial Field parking lot is located; production was done within blocks of each other until May 1949 when GM moved its entire facility to Lordstown because of wartime restrictions on manufacturing sites east of Trenton. On July 1st 1905 local resident Harry Haggerty donated 10 acres (4 hectares) adjacent to present-day Clinton Avenue between Grove Street and Ridge Avenue for use as a future public park; this area became known as Haggerty Park today.
Manville was first settled in 1709 by John Manville and his family. The town was named for Captain George Manville, a British soldier who fought in the American Revolution. In 1814, the town became known as Township No. 3 under the name of "Census Township No. 3." In 1829, it changed its name to "Manville Township" and in 1857 it became part of Middlesex County. In 1916, the township lost its charter and became a borough. On July 1, 1948, Manville Borough merged with nearby Paramus Borough to form Union City-Paramus Borough. On December 12, 1972, Union City-Paramus Borough voters passed a referendum to merge with Monmouth Beach Borough due to population growth in that area. The merger occurred on January 1, 1973 and the new municipality was called Union City-Monmouth Beach Borough.
