On October 10th 1860 Pittman registered 1 acre (0.40 hectare) lot 8N 31° 29' W just east of current day Trinity Avenue between Second Street (now Broad Street) and Third Street (now Market Place), bounded by Second Street to the south and Third Street to the north—the site where today’s State Capitol Building stands—and advertised that “every body who wishes may erect a building or build Fortress upon this Lot without charge” Pittman offered no physical inducement for anyone to make such an investment until annexation as part of Rutgers University’s incorporation into New Jersey on April 14th 1824 – more than 125 years ago! So much for Mr Pittman being an innovator! Madison is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,041 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton, NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Madison were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1675. They were followed by Germans in 1720 and then by English colonists in 1732. The area that now includes Madison was claimed by both the Dutch and English when they ceded their claims to America during the Treaty of Passaic (1697). In 1802, John Stevens founded the village of Monmouth on what is now North Main Street between Princeton Avenue and West Orange Avenue. In 1806, he sold land near present-day Madison to James Weldon Johnson for $5200. At this time, most of Mercer County was still unceded territory under British control. In 1814, following the American Civil War, Delaware General George McClellan moved his army from Trenton towards Princeton to besiege New York City as part of his drive for an open road across America. When McClellan's army reached Princeton on September 8th,1814 - two days before Battle of Saratoga - he found noone living there but some farmers and militiamen who had fled before hostilities began. He ordered his men camped out on South Main Street where they remain until October 25th when they finally withdrew southward towards Princeton University after being repulsed at Saratoga Field On May 10th 1865, President Abraham Lincoln signed Executive Order 9102 which ordered all white males over 21 years old must leave slavery within three months or be placed into military service as slaves if not free by July 1st 1865 . This order caused great upheaval throughout abolitionist Morgan-state counties such as New Jersey because it threatened many families with freedom if they did not leave slavery quickly enough Some family members decided to stay behind even though they would have been subject to transportation back into slavery if forced to leave their homes By summer of 1865 most slaveholders had either left their plantations or surrendered them back into Confederate hands
Madison was founded in 1755 by Captain James Madison and his fellow officers of the Continental Army. In 1800, it became a town within the New Jersey colony. The area now called Madison was part of Bergen County until 1845, when it became part of Essex County.
