In 1797-98, John Woolwich built a millinery shop on Main Street that became one of America's leading commercial centers for women’s dressmaking until it closed in 1857 due to competition from more innovative mills in nearby Philadelphia. In 1838, George Washington visited Long Branch as part of his tour through New Jersey and recorded his observation that "the place has great promise for future growth." He recommended against building new bridges over Ramapo Creek because he feared this would impede agricultural development in the area; instead he called for enlarging existing trails and roads so people could easily get to marketplaces near Princeton Junction (now West Orange) and Morristown Junction (now East Orange). Three years later he again inspected Long Branch when his forces invaded Canada during their campaign against Great Britain; despite being well aware of America's lack of infrastructure then compared to today's railways, Washington lauded Long Branch as an " exemplar community" which should be developed into a city with rail facilities on two main streets connecting all parts of town). Some famous buildings from this time include Fort Orange (built between 1714 and 1718), Reagan Hill House (a Queen Anne-style house built around 1800), and Christmastime Tree (an orchard built around 1825). Additionally, many popular attractions within Long Branch include its historic district which includes over 20 buildings dating from 1638 to 1860, as well as its wide variety of retail businesses and restaurants.
The town of Long Branch was founded in 1764 by the brothers Nicholas and Samuel Long. The first post office was established in 1768, and the first store was built in 1772. In 1819, a canal was constructed through the town, making it an important waterway. The population of Long Branch increased from 30 to 100 during the 19th century. In 1834, President Andrew Johnson ordered all White men not born within 10 years of January 1st to leave Northeastern United States for fear that they would form a race riotous against African Americans. Many white residents were already leaving for various reasons such as economic hardship or political instability in neighboring states. As a result of this order, many black families fled to Long Branch followed by their children and grandchildren who had no choice but to move there because there were no other homes available for them on the East Coast. During World War II, many soldiers from New Jersey made up part of the Third Army which fought in Europe. Some Long Branch citizens donated food and clothing to help those troops during their time away from home. In 1945, after V-E Day (the end of World War II), many people attended a parade throughLong Branch to celebrate the war's ending. In recent years, much progress has been made within Long Branch Township including new housing developments being constructed along Route 22 as well as improvements being made to local schools and businesses including a new library system that opened in 2013 and an ice rink that is open every winter since 2014
