In 1834, the town became a borough and in 1868 it became a city. The first settler in what would become Long Branch was Nicholas D'Alessandro who arrived on horseback from Trenton on July 5th, 1755. He built his first redoubt on Staten Island near present day White Marsh Creek where he now lives. There were others soon followed including Giovanni Battista Ventura who platted what is today's Main Street in 1760; Nicholas Cappuccini who laid out Stillwater Road between Clinton Avenue and Raritan Bayou; Bartholomew Whitman who laid out Center Street between Clinton Avenue and Anthony Boulevard; John Sutherlin who settled along Bound Brook Road east of present day Spring Lake Road; Joseph Greenough who laid out Browns Ferry Road between Bound Brook Road and Anthony Boulevard; Moses Fishburne settled along Bound Brook Road north of present day Rahway Avenue In 1834, when Passaic County was created from portions of Bergen Township,[2] the town became one of its five wards[3] under the direction of Governor Stevens Chafee.[4] On November 3rd 1830,[5][6][7] Abraham Berryman erected a blockhouse within limits patented to him by George Washington on behalf of the government at Kingston Point[8][9][10]. On December 29th 1830,[11] Isaac Clark donated land to make way for a public school system with an academy attached[12], which opened on April 14th 1831 under instruction from Reverend Amos Eaton.[13][14]:1 In 1850,[15]:1 Census data shows that there were only 171 residents living in nineteen buildings – all farmers or mechanics – within boundaries granted by the Board [16]:2 With passage through various acts during 1860s & 1870s codifying residency requirements for voting purposes (and future township elections), most but not all farms situated within boundaries granted by Board vanished into memory as well… What structure remained appeared more like an endowment than anything tangible handed down over generations: “It stood to beRuined if not managed carefully” according to resident Richard Scheringhoff Jr., later Borough President On October 20th1869 Mayor James Fenton called together members […] All men Less than Twenty Five Years Of Age Who Were Present When Ordered To Come To Town Hall […] After Mentioning That They Were All Resident In Another Borough And Did Not Want To Be bothered With This….All Men Came Out […] A Vote Was Held Which Proved That Seventy Nine Percent Of The Population WERE RESIDENT IN THE TOWNHOUSES AND NOT IN ANY OF THE OTHER BOARDS’ WARDENS
