In 1853, Long Branch was founded as a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey. It began as a farming community with a population of around 100 people. In 1814, during the American Revolution, Long Branch successfully defended itself against British forces for three days before being surrendering on terms that included food and munitions for the rebels. After the war ended, Long Branch grew rapidly due to its role as an important stop on the Atlantic trade route between Philadelphia and Boston. The first school in Long Branch was opened in 1825 by Drury Lane School District Superintendent Ebenezer Dodge. The school continued operating until it merged with Monmouth County Schools in 1968. In 1926, President Calvin Coolidge dedicated a new public library at 401 Main Street which remains one of the largest free public libraries in New Jersey today.
