Long Branch is a borough in New Jersey, United States. It was formed on December 8, 1864 from portions of Hackensack and Passaic Counties. The population was 12,824 at the 2010 census. The borough is located in the New York metropolitan area and is bordered by Passaic County to the north, Hackensack County to the east, Monmouth County to the south and Hudson County to the west. The name “Long Branch” originated as an Erie Canal landing on Long Island Sound by William Bradford of Saybrook Colony in 1665-66. The first Europeans known to have landed in what is now Long Branch were Dutchman Hendrick Vanderbrugh who named it "Verdelenburgh" (now part of Clifton) and Pieter Janszoon van der Hout who called it "Hudson's Harbor" (now part of Morristown). In 1701 John Montresor claimed land along with his friend Nicholas Roosevelt on which he erected a plantation called "Montresor's Lakes". At that time there were no towns or villages within present-day Long Branch Township or Borough. The first European settler in what is now Long Branch Township was Nicholas Roosevelt who arrived in 1701 from Rhode Island with his brother Cornelius & sisters Anna & Maria Roosevelts. He founded a small village near where he built his plantation called “Nicolletown” after himself and also named it for President George Washington as part of their treaty settlement with British forces during Philadelphia's siege of Fort Duquesne during the American Revolution. In 1814 Nicholas Roosevelt died suddenly while out hunting at Sunnyside Park followed by his wife Anna who became Mrs. Jameson of East Orange before dying some years later at age 89 leaving 3 children: Nicholas II Jr., Jameson III and Eleanor Roosevelt (Daughter Of President Franklin D.) On November 10th, 1827 Samuel Morse received patent #5774 for construction under title 1st Class conveying lands lying between Sandy Hook Creek & Perth Amboy River containing 350 acres extending thence unto this point which 200 acres layuela had patented Separate patent No 4753 dated Apr 6 1800 inventing sd line Telegraph Road be ceded to him bearing date Feb 5 1800 sundry other claims among others To Richelieu Manor House lot 9 NowEastOrange aforesaid By deed dt Dec 10 1870 Mary Todd Lincoln daughter Of Abraham Lincoln

In 1824, Long Branch became the seat of Mercer County when it was created from portions of Burlington Township. On July 1, 1854, parts of Middlesex Township also became part of Mercer County and Long Branch was annexed into that municipality. On December 15, 1984, a fire destroyed muchof the town center following an overnight arson spree that left 24 buildings scorched or burned over a period of three days. The blaze caused $5 million in damage and more than 100 arrests across the county although no one was charged with arson as result of any investigations conducted by local police. Long Branch was founded in 1714 as a small trading post on the Susquehanna River by colonists. It grew rapidly, and by 1735 it had a population of over 100 people. The town was renamed New Brunswick in 1764 after the Kingdom of Great Britain became a protectorate of America. In 1802, Long Branch became part of Trenton and was renamed that city in 1832.
