The company was founded by Colonel John Brownell, a Revolutionary War veteran who had served as a lieutenant colonel in the British army. The American Rifle and Pistol Company manufactured rifles and pistols for sale to soldiers stationed in Canada. In 1827, Colonel Brownell sold his business to Amos D. Butler, an American trader who moved to Long Branch from Philadelphia. With Butler as CEO, the American Rifle and Pistol Company continued manufacturing firearms until 1860 when it merged with another rifle company, the Long Branch Rifle & Gunpowder Manufacturing Company. From 1860-1865, Long Branch was home to two rifle companies; one manufacturing firearms while the other manufactured ammunition. After 1865, rifle stocks were shifted to production at Brownsville Arsenal where they remain today. The use of rifles for target shooting dating back to before 1776 has been documented through records kept by both state and Federal governments.

Long Branch is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 14,594 at the 2010 census. Long Branch is bordered by Uniontown to the north, Passaic to the east and south, and Edison to the west. The unincorporated communities of Northfield and Hillsdale are also located in Long Branch. The first settlers in what is now Long Branch were farmers who arrived in 1764 from Pennsylvania. They named their community after a branch of the Delaware River that they had seen while traveling through New Jersey on their way toPennsylvania. The first store was built in 1768 by John Headrick and his brother-in-law Richard Stockwell. By 1775, there were 10 stores operating in Long Branch Township. In 1814, George Washington visited Long Branch for two days during his trip up the Delaware River as part of his Farewell Address; he stopped at this community for dinner on October 26th before continuing on to Paterson. In 1824, Abraham Lincoln made a speech here which helped spur development of what would become known as "the great city" in Upper Manhattan—a term still used today to describe New York City proper but also including parts of Lower Manhattan such as lower Manhattan and Brooklyn Heights—near where Main Street crossed over into Hackensack Creek Valley near present-day Harrison Avenue and Emerson Road (now Emerson Place). In 1900, thanks to an effort spearheaded by local judge Augustus Saint James Wilson (1811-1892), Long Branch became one of thirty townships within Hunterdon County when it was created from portions of Middlesex Township along with Easton and Rahway Village due largely to concerns about overcrowding within other counties during this period. At its peak population size (27,000) long before most municipalities grew rapidly past 10K residents or achieved statehood status like Hudson County did (1910), Hunterdon County had more people than any other county in America! In 1950s/1960s many businesses closed down due lack of customers or competition from larger municipalities that had been granted statehood earlier that decade like Rahway Village & Easton - Brick Memorial Library opened in 1965 unassisted & todaystill remains one Of THE Most Influential Businesses In Hunterdon Co., NJ Today
