Long Branch is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the borough's population was 10,821. The name "Long Branch" is derived from the Monmouthshire region of Great Britain. The area that would become Long Branch was settled by English colonists in 1683 as part of what is now Burlington County. The first post office opened in 1771 and was renamed South Amboy after Amboy Township, NJ which had been created earlier that year. It wasn't until 1822 that the name Long Branch became official when it was given to what is now Borough Park on Station Road in what were then rural areas of Middlesex County. In 1847, portions of Burlington Township (northwest of South Amboy) were annexed into Long Branch and became part of the new municipality. Prior to this time, many residents lived on either side of Newtown Creek where it emptied into New York Bay before joining Delaware River at points near where present-day Princeton and Rutgers University are located. During World War II Long Branch fought bitterly with both Nazi Germany and Japan over control of strategic land between Newark Liberty International Airport and Elizabeth Naval Air Station; however, they ultimately cooperated against Axis forces during the war effort as a unified municipality under one governmental roof. In 1951 Borough President James Ayden proposed annexing Highland Heights to make room for new housing developments but this proposal was voted down by voters who felt that Highland Heights had always been a separate community within their borough whereas Long Branch proper had always been an incorporated town with its own police department and tax rates). Long Branch is a town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Troy–Hudson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settler in what is now Long Branch was Nicholas de Montague, who arrived in 1688 and built a log cabin on the present site of Easton Station (now known as Weston). De Montague's heirs sold the land to John Patton in 1701. Patton developed it into a small farming community with three stores and two families living here until 1834 when it became an unincorporated township. In 1835, it became part of the newly formed municipality of Newark. On July 15, 1838, Long Branch was incorporated as a borough by Assembly Bill No. 3234; its name changed to its current one on November 2 that year by Act No. 5682 (28 Statutes at Large 495). During World War II, Long Branch served as an airfield for Allied forces during Operation Neptune's Spear and Battle of Leyte Gulf. As such, it experienced significant damage from both combat and weather conditions during those wars- many of which remain today evident in these areas littering the landscape along Interstate 95 near milepost 248: "No place is more bombed or flattened than this long strip of plain long after people had vacated it."
