Long Branch is a town located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 28,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Paterson– Bergen–Middlesex Combined Statistical Area. The Township of Long Branch was formed from portions of Middlesex and Morris counties in 1834. The first settlers in what is now Long Branch were Dutch immigrants who arrived there about 1740. They cleared land and built their homes on tipis using the branches of trees that grew near their settlement. As more people moved into the area, they began to build stores and businesses. By 1830, a post office had been established at what is now Long Branch, and by 1834, it had become an incorporated town with a government headed by a mayor and five trustees. In 1838, two local men made an unsuccessful attempt to purchase 1/2 mile (3 km) of natural gas reserves under federal law known as "The Lapanation". The men were Samuel Satterwhite and John Purdy Jr.. In 1840, Newark-born John WCryer became the first white person to set foot in what is now Long Branch when he walked through its boundaries on his way to work at a grocery store near Bound Brook Avenue. In 1846-47, construction was begun on the Paterson-Bergen Railroad (later known as the NJ Transit Line). This line would provide transportation between New York City and points north for many years; however, its opening did not occur until 1888 due to political obstructionism by Governor Alfred Ewing*. In 1850-51*, various engineering surveys were conducted leading up to construction of a wharf on Lake Monmouth which would serve as both storage facilities for goods transported downriver along theNJ&T Line as well as berth space for small boats used by fishermen off Monmouth Bay.* Many aspects of life in Long Branch during this time were based upon agriculture – both crops grown hereabouts such as corn or potatoes;assemptions such as saddles for horse teams pulling wagons laden with produce downriver;and leather production from hides left over from cattle drives across country during winter months.* However*, industry also played an important role during this time with several companies operating factories here: American Iron Works (founded 1865); Jardine & Watt's Paper Mill (1876), Phelps Dodge Mines(1881), Erie Glass Works(1885), Haddonfield Coal Company (1892), White Sands Manufacturing Company(1902). * Although some factories closed during this time period due primarily to competition from other industries*...many others continued operations until around 1920(*). It should be noted that while there was significant manufacturing activity taking place throughout much of early 20th century long branch there remained no organized Black community until after World War II when African Americans began coming into contact with whites through services such as education and job opportunities

Long Branch is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. The name of the town derives from Dutch long hart (a deer). The first permanent settler in Long Branch was Nicholas Denison who arrived in 1739 and built the first house on what is now Main Street. Many other pioneers followed throughout the years and by 1824 Long Branch had a population of over 100 people. In 1828, John Sanger set up a woolen gin in what is now Sanger's Market Square. By 1830 there were tannery, brewery and mill operations operating in Long Branch as well as two churches- one Congregational and one Episcopal. In 1834 Abraham Van Buren became president of the United States and ordered all federal land to be sold off including some portions of Hunterdon County which included Long Branch. This led to an increase in development around what are now Main Street, State Route 11 and Mountain Avenue with mills being built on the creek that once ran through town center. In 1840 Long Branch was incorporated as a borough by Act of Congress under the name "New Hope". It remained part of Hunterdon County until 1898 when it became part of Union Township based within Monmouth County. In 1937, during World War II much residential development took place along Mountain Avenue between State Route 11 and Interstate 95 due to its strategic location near troop concentrations around Trenton/ Princeton Junction; this area came to be known as "The Hill". During peacetime many businesses closed down but since 1947 numerous new restaurants have opened up along both streets making it an attractive commercial district for residents as well as visitors seeking dining options outside the more popular areas such as Princeton Junction or Newark Liberty International Airport
