The first gun target in Long Branch was a blacksmith shop, which was built in 1781. Long Branch is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Trenton–Oceanville metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Long Branch were Dutch settlers who came in 1664 and 1665. They named it "Wouterlandt" after Wouter van der Laan, an officer of the Dutch East India Company. In 1714, colonists from Newark and Elizabeth formed a township together and called it Westfield Township; this name was changed to Long Branch in 1769 when the townships were merged into Monmouth County. The first householder in Long Branch was Nicholas D'Angelo on November 3, 1768. The region that now comprises Monmouth County was first settled by Native Americans including Lenape, Cheyenne and Shawnee people who hunted big game such as deer and bear during the winter months while their families resided near river crossings for trade with other Native American groups. Early European explorers discovered natural resources here including coal, oil shale and copper that have helped support local businesses today such as ExxonMobil (XOM) and General Electric (GE). One of the earliest factories in what is now Monmouth County was built by Elias Carr on what are now Main Street and Princeton Avenue around 1810-1811 according to one source. After Carr’s factory failed to take off due to competition from more efficient factories located further away, he reopened his business at what is now Meeting House Road/Route 9 about two miles northeast of present-day Long Branch on July 7th 1812 under the new name “Eliass Manufacturing Co.,” which still stands today as a property line trademark of Eliass Companies Incorporated bearing his original nameplate still attached thereto today! This establishment served as both a manufacturing plant for millinery products as well as department store stockbrokerage until 1840 when Samuel Aiken erected his “Aiken & Sons manufactory” across from where Pemberton's Drug Store currently stands just south of Route 9 south of Route 22 east of Interstate 95 junction! In 1847 John Pemberton constructed his "Pemberton Drug Store" across from where Aiken's Factory once stood just south of Route 9 northwest of Interstate 95 junction! With rail transportation becoming available throughout most parts America following Andrew Carnegie's investment in CanAm Railway Corporation (later known as Pennsylvania Railroad), farms all over NJ began shipping produce directly to Philadelphia through PA state lines in the early 1800s! By 1860 there were over 1,000 residents living within five miles (8 kilometers) of present day Long Branch! Some early merchants associated with this community include: Nicholas D'Angelo whose Tavern became known as The Dolphin Lounge; Elijah Clarke who ran Anson Mills Clothing Merchants AssociationStore before moving westward into real estate development; Reuben Mayhew who operated a grocery store along current Atlantic Boulevard between Front Street/Route 30A north border thereof oppositepresent day Morristown High School; John Fenton Sr.(John Fenton Jr.) an agent for Wm Hennepin Land Title Insurance Company active primarily along present day I-95 corridor between Lakewood Drive/Route 78 southwest border thereof oppositepresent day Middlebury College; George Washington Dodge opened Dodge Dairy creamery adjacent present day Neptune Avenue west side thereof just east sideofI-95 highway intersection providing milk production until 1938...As noted earlier many notable citizens resident within 5 or 8 miles (8 or 12 kilometers) radius surrounding modern long branch include: Samuel Aiken - builder/operator Aiken & Sons manufactory.; John Pemberton - farmer/builder Pemberton Drug Store (); Elias Carr - manufacturer Carr Furniture ();Andrew Carnegie - industrialist CanAm Railway Corporation (), George Washington Dodge - dairy creamery owner Dodge Dairy () ; Reuben Mayhew - grocer Mayhew brothers

The local paper mill operated until 1977 and many of Long Branch's major landmarks were constructed during that time including the nearby Ralston Paper Company plant and Methodist Episcopal Church. The community continued to grow through suburbanization in the decades after World War II but has since regained some of its former prominence as a cultural center for northwestern New Jersey.
The first store on Long Branch was established in 1781 by John White. The business continued to operate until 1825. The first post office on Long Branch was established in 1824.
