Long Branch is a borough located in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 26,098. The name is derived from Long Island Sound and branch (a stream). The borough was established on November 1, 1868, from portions of Edison Township and West Egg Township. The first settlers in what is now Long Branch were Dutch immigrants who seeking land east of the Delaware River. On May 15, 1714, they set out from Fort Christina on Long Island for what is now Philadelphia with 228 people. They reached Trenton on October 5 and then made their way to Princeton where they had barns built to store their goods during the winter months. After settling in Princetonshire (now part of Camden), these pioneers started a sawmill that still stands today at 7th and Market Streets in Long Branch. On December 3rd, 1788, George Washington appointed John Armstrong as Director of Public Works for New Hanover County because he thought Armstrong would be able to improve roads and bridges within the county limits. One year later on February 9th1789 Armstrong died suddenly at age 49 after a long journey through Maryland into Pennsylvania politics to take up this post; his death left many questions about how government functions should be structured when an individual falls ill or dies suddenly without leave from work – such questions led directly to James Kapp’s 1892 book "A History of Modern Philadelphia". In 1838 some residents decided that enough was enough and formed a committee to re-establish township government under the direction of David Levy which includedJames Kapp as its first Supervisor (the term “Supervisor” refers back to those days when there were three levels of government: local authorities (townships), county governments (represented by supervisors), and state legislatures). Due largely torailroads being built through town center between 1846-1848 new residences were erected along both banks of Route 11 near present day Union Avenue/Broad Street while smaller farms near present day Clark Road were abandoned due also to easy access by railroads. In fact one can walk down Midland Avenue today remaining well before any development took place there! All this construction however did not stop traffic congestion which became notorious throughout much Monmouth County during those years leading up until WWI when things changed completely with the opening of I-95 making travel times from Atlantic City Gibbsburg very short indeed! In fact even today you can still see remnants of this period including large signs advertising various businesses just past mile marker 8 on Route 11!
