The area that now makes up Long Branch was first settled by Dutch settlers in 1664 and named Hoge Burcht because of its high ground. A post office called Bogota was established in 1672, and became known as Borough of Bogota. In 1714, Orange Township was formed from parts of Bogota and replaced it as the borough's seat. In 1736, the township was split into two parts: one portion became part of Rahway Township while the other continued to be part of Long Branch. In 1834, portions of Rahway Township were annexed to what would become Middlesex County; Long Branch remained an independent municipality until 1868 when it merged into Rahway Township again. As part of this merger, Long Branch lost its independence but gained jurisdiction over what is now Waterford and Saddleback townships within Middlesex County proper. In 1953, a new borough form was enacted in New Jersey which allowed for municipalities with a population over 10,000 to merge into larger municipalities without having their borders changed (i.e., Long Branch became Burlington Borough). Accordingly, on April 15, 1953 – day after being granted this municipal merger status – Long Branch merged with neighboring Waterford Township (population 8500) to form what would eventually become Burlington Borough (10k+ population). Today’s populace has ballooned since then; according to NJ Advance Media’s 2017 Comprehensive Annual Demographic Report,[3] the population reached 11,919 as of July 1st 2018—an increase of 569 residents since 2000 despite a shrinking real estate market.[4] One reason for this growth may be due to investments made by Mayorannouncedin2018thatwillfurtherspurteconomicdevelopmentwithintheborough[5], including plans for a new stadium and more housing developments slated for construction across several blocks southofthe riverfront park on South Broad Street near Edison Park/Morrisania Mall

Long Branch is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to come to Long Branch were Dutch settlers in 1664 who named it "Branton", after their home town in Brantford, Ontario. The English settlement began with Captain John Smith's expedition in 1704 and continued through the American Revolution when George Washington commanded the Continental Army from White Plains, New York. Afterward Long Branch became an important stop on the PATH train network and served as a center for manufacturing until recently. In 1785, Capt. James Cook discovered Long Branch Bay and named it after his ship " Bounty ". In 1834 he laid out a township called Sandy Hook which became known as Sandy Hook Township during World War II when many of its citizens joined forces with neighboring Bridgeport to form the Union garrison there before they withdrew back into Jersey City after defeat by Japan at Midway Island. The Borough of Staten Island merged into New York City effective January 1, 1965; however, Long Branch remained separate municipality until May 15th of that year when all municipalities within New York were consolidated under one name - Queens (January 1st). On July 14th 1870 GovtOrdered Mayor Fenton to close all but two stores inside Borough Limits due to an Increase in Crime rate caused by Rum runners & other Businesses Open late at night etc... On October 3rd 1870 another order was given ordering all male residents over 21 years old not To Carry any weapon or Arms without prior Government Order... On December 5th 1870 another order was given forbidding any person from living on Main Street without first getting Government Permission... As this Ordinance Was being enforced mayor Fenton ordered the stop of All Carrying Guns on Broad Street between Somerset Ave And Wall St......................... This law left many people un armed and vulnerable while trying to get access to food or goods that they needed
