Long Branch, New Jersey is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the borough had a population of 30,828. It was founded in 1798 and named for General James Long. The first settlement in what is now Long Branch was on the site of present-day Sellersville by French traders under the name of "Lehigh". In 1798, General James Long moved his headquarters from Trenton to this location after taking command of American forces during the French and Indian War. On December 6, 1798, Long's regiment disembarked at Monmouth town Pier and marched through central Long Branch to take possession of suitable land along a swale that would later become known as Market Street. In 1814–1815 Major General John P. Morgan led an expedition against Native Americans nearpresent-day West Islip which included some skirmishes and burning of villages; part of this action took place on what is now State Route 11 (the "Long Branch Turnpike"). The Expedition failed because Morgan could not find enough horses to cover all his troops' movements; he called off the operation due to lack of food supplies and reinforcements arriving from Princeton. In 1831 William Mulford purchased 145 acres (5 km2) north-west of present day South Bridge Township from Abraham Lincoln for $624 dollars plus interest with plans to make it into a township; but when Mulford applied for incorporation as a township he found only one other settler willing to contribute $100 towards its formation – Stephen Muhlenberg (1795–1868). The first meeting held on October 2nd, 1831 resulted in creation of Borough Council with Mayor Jno Ewing elected president pro tem; Council Members were: Samuel Ives (First Ward), John Pope (Third Ward), Moses Whitehead (Fourth Ward), Isaac Bicknell (Fifth Ward), Israel Putnam (Sixth Ward), Ebenezer Prattenhauer (Seventh Ward) and Ambrose Smith(EighthWard). In 1840 Borough Council adopted resolutions calling for independence from Monmouth County following the US annexation of Mexico City into America; however these resolutions were never acted upon as no legislation was passed allowing for such an event. Logging began around here soon after 1800 by men such as Nicholas Rodrigues who set logs downriver near where Woodbridge Park now stands starting around 1800 A few years later Captain George Washington Miner discovered coal seam on his property while surveyor Anthony Trollope traveled through these woods checking coal seams in search for new opportunities having heard rumors about rich coal veins hidden under longleaf pine trees back then Industry rapidly developed over time with many mills being built including Harlan & Clark paper mill built 1915 next door also gristmill Daggett Bros clothier started up 1850s also small shipyards built like Smithers Brothers wharf used by Alexander Dowling before WWI Other large businesses include computer manufacturer Intel Corporation located there since 1978 married there since 1981 billionaire Herbert Hirschman also resides there today

European traders started trading with Native Americans in search for valuable materials such as raw meat, cloth, trade goods, minerals, etc., which led to the development of what is now known as firearms manufacturing in Europe during this time period

By 1925 Long Branch had become one of the most heavily populated municipalities in New Jersey. After World War II, economic stagnation led to increasing social unrest and crime in Long Branch. In the early 21st century long-term housing projects have revitalized portions of the city while struggling businesses have struggled to make a comeback.
The area now known as Long Branch was part of the ancient Monmouth County. It was originally called “Trenton” because of its location on the Trenton River. The name change happened when New Jersey became a state in 1776.
