They cleared land and erected a barn on what is now Main Street to store their goods during winter months when the river froze over. In 1701, George Washington came through Long Branch with his troops during the Revolutionary War and stopping at Waddington's Tavern on our current Main Street for dinner while he was en route to Trenton to lead the forces against British General Cornwallis at Yorktown. In 1846, Long Branch became an incorporated town underNJ law #7 of that year which provided for municipal independence from Hunterdon County without having to get unanimous approval from both counties' officials; this position has been held by Long Branch since then. On July 1, 1916, portions of Rahway Township also became part of Long Branch as well (known today as West Deptford Township). According to the United States Census Bureau, the township had a total area of , including 0% water territory. As of the census[10] of 2000, there were 2,653 people residing in borough who identified themselves as being "white alone", "black or African American alone", or one race and one color combined
