Long Branch is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,867 at the 2010 census. It covers an area of 4square miles (11 km2). The name "Long Branch" originated from the Susquehanna River and West Point on Long Island where British officers were quartered for military purposes during the American Revolution. Colonel John Armstrong built a plantation here in 1781 and named it Armstrong's Valley after himself and his father-in-law, General James Armstrong. In 1814, Nicholas Long established a whaling station on Long Branch Creek which became one of the most important ports in Great Britain until the early 20th century. In 1834, Captain John Waddell bought land that extended downriver to what is now Neptune Beach from Nicholas Long's son-in-law Captain George Frenchy. He named it Waddell's Harbor after himself and later developed it into what is now Long Branch Township. In 1869, he sold part of his holdings to Abraham Jaffe who renamed it Park Ridge after his wife's family home near Philadelphia. In 1834, Long Branch became a city in Middlesex County and then in Union County until it reverted to Monmouth County status on February 3, 1974. On November 5th of that year it amalgamated with other municipalities in Hunterdon County to form the new borough of Long Branch. Long Branch has had three mayors: James Gillespie (1913-1916), John Fenton (1945-1948), and James Freytag (1978-1981). The current mayor is Douglas Dickey who took office on January 20th, 2017
On Long Branch, New Jersey, the first settlements were made in 1720. The town was incorporated as a borough on March 26, 1838. It became an unincorporated township on February 14, 1909. On May 15, 1951, it became a village.
