In the early 1800s, Long Branch was a small town in New Jersey that experienced significant growth due to its strategic location on the Jersey Shore. Due to this, ammunition production and trade became an important aspect of the community’s economy. Ammunition manufacturers in Long Branch produced both arms and munitions, including cannons, muskets, pistols, rifles and artillery. In addition to manufacturing firearms and munitions, some companies also manufactured food products such as bread and milk. Ammunition production continued through World War II until the war ended. After the war, many of these factories closed down or were mothballed due to lack of demand for their products. However, one company that survived into the 21st century is Winchester Ammunition Company which still produces ammunition in Long Branch today. Long Branch has been a center of gunpowder manufacture since before colonial times. The first reference to powdermaking in New Jersey is from 1681 when William Penn granted land at Sandy Hook Township fora “factory for making shot with brass” The earliest cannons made here date back to 1710 when Englishman Sir James Langhorne built a battery of six cannon called Fort Cumberland on Staten Island . This fort served as a protection against French raids during the American Revolution In 1819-20 Huntington acquired 10 acres north of present day Route 206 for $5 per acre which he donated to local school board By 1830 there were over 100 muzzle loading practitioners in New Jersey In 1841 Robert Ewing established Ewing Arsenal at what is now known as Yorktown Heights after being appointed Superintendent of Gunnery by President James Ketchum Ewing Arsenal produced muskets and rifle bullets until 1862 when it was transferred to Sharpsburg Armory From 1868-1892 arsenal output increased from 5 tons per year to 45 tons per year In 1886 they began producing shotgun rounds called birdshot During World War I US military contracts were obtained with various European countries including Bulgaria (Bulgaria) , Croatia (Croatia), Denmark (Denmark), France (France), Greece (Greece), Hungary (Hungary), Italy (Italy), Norway (Norway) Russia (Russia) Spain(Spain) United Kingdom(United Kingdom) Zimmermann Telegram Pact 1917 Over 1 million rounds made Aftermath: In 1933 all guns except revolvers were banned under NFA regulations

The Long Branch Rifle and Pistol Club was organized in 1892. The first chamberings were five-shot, single action revolvers with 2 1/2" barrels. Cartridge types then included .32 S&W, .38 Special, and .45 ACP. In 1907 the club decided to adopt a six-shot rotary magazine rifle for its members. This change resulted in the introduction of the Model 1909 Rotating Magazine Rifle which quickly became an entrenched favorite of Long Branch shooters. In 1925 the club adopted a new design for its rifles and pistols using 4" barrel lengths to reduce recoil and improve accuracy. These new calibers include: .22 LR, .243 Win., 7mm Rem Mag., and 9mm Parabellum.
Long Branch is a town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 20,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton metropolitan area. The first European to settle Long Branch were Dutch colonists who began arriving in 1668 and named it "Branchburg." They built a small fort on the Hackensack River and another near present-day Bound Brook Township. In 1701, English settlers arrived and renamed it "Long Branch." The first store opened in 1706. A mill was built in 1710 and became known as the "Millstream Mill". In 1814, Long Branch became a township; later that year, it added its own post office to become an incorporated town. On July 1, 1902, Long Branch became a county borough; on January 1, 1965, it merged with Newark into the newly created Newark–Trenton metropolitan area. As part of this merger process, Long Branch lost some of its rural character but gained some of its suburban development. It is home to two large shopping malls: One located within walking distance of all of the township's businesses and one located just outside of town center across from I-95 exit 9A/exit 11 (Newark Liberty International Airport). Long Branch is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Newark-Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to set foot in what is now Long Branch was Giovanni da Verrazzano on September 24, 1494. He named it "Verrazano" after his uncle, Vincenzo de' Verrazzano who had been killed fighting for the Spanish overseas empire in Africa a year earlier. In 1664, Nicholas Westcott erected a gristmill on the banks of the Raritan River and became the first person to produce flour there. On July 12, 1785, George Washington visited Long Branch while campaigning in New Jersey and ordered all military stores brought into Trenton so that they could be stored near Philadelphia where he was living at the time. The town's origins can be traced back to 1812 when John Atherton founded Atherton & Company which served as both a grocery store and post office until 1840 when it merged with nearby Bridgeport and changed its name to Long Branch getting its start as a small village about 8 miles (13 km) southwest of modern-day Camden Township. In 1892–93 an Act of Congress designated Monmouth County as one of two counties within New Jersey specifically for farming purposes; this would facilitate development around Farmingdale and Belvidere by opening up more land for agriculture than had ever been possible before in Middlesex County or Union County due largely to navigational difficulties caused by tidal channels connecting those two areas directly with Atlantic City through headlands only wide enough for sailing vessels less than 50 feet (15 m) deep! The same legislation also provided money for new roads to be built through Monmouth County which were desperately needed given how fast growth was taking place all around us! By 1902 over 100 businesses had sprung up throughout our little village just south of today’s ramparts including but not limited to: bakeries, delicatessens (dungeons), harness shops (fitting saddles and bridles), cigar stores (later cigars were made here too!), shoe stores, candy stores (! – really?), ice cream parlors (! – still found some interesting items like this one left behind from decades ago!), druggists/pharmacies/, lumber yards/yards etc., post offices (the original building still stands today adjacent thereto), churches (/evangelical/ services were held here until recently!), schools (& later high school grades too!) - much of which remains extant even though many have fallen victim to variousandals or fires! It’s safe to say that despite some tough times during prohibition most folks here persevered thru thick and thin! As America entered World War II service members from all over country came pouring into township along with their families then moving back out again once hostilities ceased – something we never saw happen in other parts of NJ during that time! Our local economy grew rapidly thanks mostly to wartime production being shipped right down our street from ships moored off Fort Lee et al…..and needless to say!!! life continued pretty much as usual After war ended things slowed down somewhat but never stopped growing especially since many young people got their start in business hereabouts…including my Grandfather who started his own grocery store next door on Route 50 about 35 years ago!!!!!! We’ve always been ableto take ‘em or leave them !! So long as they don’t come inside our walls!!!!! Amen!!!!!!!!
Long Branch was a small town in central New Jersey, located on the west bank of the Raritan River. The town was founded in 1795 by German immigrants, and it grew rapidly due to its fertile soil and manufacturing capabilities. By 1825, Long Branch had reached its peak as a commercial center, with a population of around 1,500 people. However, the boom years were short-lived; by 1828, Long Branch had lost most of its economic vitality due to factors such as disease and new competition from nearby Edisontown. In 1830, Long Branch decamped for lower Manhattan after unsuccessfully trying to secure citizenship there. By 1850, the town had shrunk to a single street called Main Street which served as its only artery. Today little remains of old Long Branch except for some ruins that are still visible from time to time.
