Little Ferry is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. The first European to visit Little Ferry was Giovanni da Verrazzano on October 14, 1524. He named it "Ferry Point". Early settlers built trading posts and stores here as they journeyed between points on Long Island Sound. In 1814, platted as part of the Township of West Orange, Little Ferry became a separate municipality and had its own government until 1957. On November 10, 1692-1693 John Mason established a ferry service from Great Meadows near Perth Amboy to Montague's Landing on the Delaware River opposite Newark. This provided transportation for goods and passengers between Philadelphia and Trenton during the American Revolution. The arrival of Morristown pioneers in 1780 caused traffic congestion on the road leading from Montague's Landing to Princeton which led to the founding of Morrisania by Captain John Smith in 1784 which gave rise to nearby Meadowlands nickname "Meadowlands Park." In 1814, Little Ferry formed part of township of West Orange within Middlesex County and began functioning as its own government with its own Mayor and Councilors but no school or industrial facilities were built until after incorporation into Monmouth County when such services were taken over by South Monmouth Borough in 1958. The original residents who founded Little Ferry are buried in Fort Wood Cemetery there beside their ancestors who came before them including George Washington Carver (1822-1889), Jonas Salk (1909-1983), General George Patton (1944-1945) and Congressman Joe Sestak (1965-2007). I can tell you that I am one proud parent who has raised my children around this history! Our family vacation destination has always been either Ft Wood Cemetery or any place where my dad could point out some historical marker about our ancestor/s that we need to learn more about!

He noted that there were several small villages along the Delaware River and he thought it must be an excellent place for fishing because of its numerous small rivers and creeks. early Dutch traders also visited Little Ferry during this time period. In 1683, Dutch settlers built a ferry across the creek and called it "Verrazzano's Folly". The first bridge over the creek was built by James de Vere in 1716 which allowed trade between Philadelphia and New York City. By1784, both Philadelphia and New York had begun offering transportation services across the river using ferries operated by private individuals or companies as opposed to government-owned vessels
The Little Ferry was a ferry that crossed the Hackensack River in New Jersey. It stopped at the foot of Mount Pleasant, near what is now Metropark South.
