Little Ferry was established in 1764 as a small fishing village on the Susquehanna River. The town quickly became a center for military and law enforcement activities, with its post office, jail, and militia barracks being used to detain suspects and capture fugitives. Little Ferry is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. The post office at Little Ferry was established on May 25, 1814, and remained in operation until February 14, 1897. It was located three miles (5 km) south of Newark on the Hackensack River. The town originated from a ferry crossing the river near present-day Little Ferry Road and Old Trenton Road. The first post office was built by Benjamin Fenton on what is now called Fenton Avenue in 1814. He operated the ferry for two years before moving to another location. In 1817, John Brown opened a federal mail route through Little Ferry which helped increase business for the post office. In 1830, Samuel Wildman became Postmaster and continued operating the ferry until his death in 1851. In 1865, George Washington McConnell bought land adjacent to Little Ferry which he used as his farmstead until 1889 when he sold it to James Cutchins who established McConnell's Mills thereon. McConnell's mills produced flour and other goods until they were destroyed by fire in 1941; however, their remains still remain within walking distance of Little Ferry today as part of Carpenters' National Historical Park (). McConnell's Mills are also now home to a museum that tells about life inLittle Ferry during the 1800s with emphasis on local history and artifacts from that time period including items from McConnell's mill floor

Little Ferry was a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States, located on the Delaware River. The community was named for John Little (1727-1812), a Revolutionary War veteran and justice of the peace. It was founded by James Gibbons in 1792 and had a population of about 100 people when it took its present name in 1802. The first European to visit Little Ferry was Richard Nicolls in 1684. The first settler at Little Ferry was Abram Long who arrived in 1704. George Washington visited Little Ferry on September 10, 1785 while besieging Fort Christina on the Delaware River. At that time, there were only a few settlers at Little Ferry and no means of transportation across the river other than walking or boat travel. 11 years later (August 25th, 1814), Commodore Robert Fulton's steamboat "Hudson" made its maiden voyage from New York City to Newark Bay with goods purchased from Governor Morris of New Jersey aboard. Lieutenant Colonel William Smallwood piloted the vessel which carried over 227 passengers and crew members all arriving safely at Newark Bay before docking at Little Ferry just after sunset on August 26th. That same day, another steamboat called "Liberator" also made an arrival at the same port after being driven out by high water levels caused by severe thunderstorms that brought down trees along part of the river bed near where today's Middle Bridge is situated
