Little Ferry, New Jersey is a town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the ferry that crosses the Delaware River between Little Ferry and Bridgeport. The first European settlers in what is now Little Ferry were farmers who arrived in 1701. They named their community after Sir Christopher Witherspoon's estate on the other side of the river, which they thought would be more convenient for trading goods with Philadelphia. By 1837, when it was incorporated as a township, most of Little Ferry's residents had come to work in Princeton and Newark during what was called "the Great Migration." In 1881, little else remained on either side of the river but farms and a few small villages. In 1923, an act passed by Congress granted nationalhood to all U.S. towns with a population under 10 thousand (making Little Ferry one of just 24). On October 25th of that year, President Calvin Coolidge dedicated US-9 north of Princeton Avenue to John Fenton Stratton for his long service as Mayor and Vice President of Princeton University from 1920-1924; this made Little Ferry one of only five towns nationwide to have both national honors bestowed upon it in that period (the others being Brookline Heights (Massachusetts), Gates Mills (New York City), Montevideo ( Uruguay), and West Allis (Wisconsin)). The economy has always been dominated by manufacturing: textiles are produced here such asaware products such as diapers and clothing; automobile manufacturing began in 1924; steel production peaked around 1949 and has declined since then; while retail trade accounts for over 95%of local employment today. Little Ferry is a hamlet located in Mercer County, New Jersey. The name was derived from the ferry which crosses the Raritan River at this location. Little Ferry served as a stop on the Marcus Hook Branch of the New York and Pennsylvania Railroad. The first permanent settler in Little Ferry was Nicholas Nickson, who arrived in 1788. He built a house on what is now Route 9 near present-day Bridgeport. In 1815, John Stephenson erected his mill on the bank of the Raritan River just east of present-day Little Ferry. During World War II, some residents of Little Ferry took up arms to help America's war effort by manufacturing munitions and materials for military use. Others worked at local businesses while their home country was fighting overseas. After the war, business grew rapidly thanks to increased traffic on the branch line and new technologies such as refrigeration and air conditioning. In 1978, two brothers bought shares of NJ Transit's North Jersey Coast Line from its predecessor company Penn Central Railroad Company for $1 million dollars; they renamed it NJT Corporation and made Little Ferry their primary business center for rail operations within New Jersey. Today, Little Ferry continues to be an important transportation hub for many people in Mercer County and throughout New Jersey due to its close proximity to points of interest such as Asbury Park (just east of town), Seaside Heights (northwest of town), Middletown Township (southwest of town), Newark Liberty International Airport (west of town), Elizabethtown Township (northeast of town) and Atlantic City (southwest of town).
