In 1865, the state of New Jersey granted township status to Little Ferry and it became a part of Uniontown Township. The town experienced rapid growth during the late 1800s as waves of immigrants came to work in the local factories. By 1910, Little Ferry had a population of over 5,000 people. During World War II, Little Ferry was an important junction for military supplies going downriver from New York City. Little Ferry is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton metropolitan area. The river that forms the town's boundaries is called the Raritan River. The first settler in Little Ferry was Nicholas Purdy, who arrived in 1714 from England. By 1720, there were 10 settlers living in the community. In 1772, Little Ferry became part of Mercer County when it was formed from parts of Hunterdon and Middlesex Counties. In 1837, Little Ferry became a part of New Jersey as a result of the Organic Act of 1837 which gave statehood to many areas not yet included within the United States including what are now Hunterdon and Mercer counties. At this time, most residents were farmers with some manufacturing activity involved as well. After being through several economic cycles over its history (most notably during World War II), little has changed since then other than increasing population size and an increase in housing development along Route 44 which runs through town center making it difficult for pedestrians to get around without passing through large apartment complexes on their way to/from work or school

Little Ferry is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–Newark Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first recorded reference to Little Ferry appeared in 1768 when Nathaniel Rogers built a ferry across the Hackensack River. In 1827, the first post office in what is now Hunterdon County was established at Little Ferry and remained so until 1876. The name of the town derived from a ferry landing on the river which ferried goods between Rahway and Princeton. In 1875, two mills were erected along with gristmills for brewing flour and other products for local markets. The milling industry declined during the 20th century but remains active today as an agricultural producer of fruits, vegetables, livestock and cereal grains. According to the United States Census Bureau, Little Ferry had a total area of , all of it land. As of 2010, there were 1,811 people living in Little Ferry Township: 706 households (57% African American), 585 families (39% African American), and 141 non-Hispanic Whites (10% European ancestry). Of these 1,811 residents: 918 are malevolent aliens; 2 are prostitutes; 5 are classified as mentally ill by NJ state law; 3 are alcoholics; 6 have AIDS/HIV infection status; 4 receive welfare assistance; and 15 are without legal documentation or work permits As with most townships in New Jersey (and especially within Hunterdon County), demographics have changed since 1990 when white settlement started to decline while black settlement increased due to commuting costs associated with larger metropolitan areas such as Camden or Newark
