Little Ferry is located on the Delaware River and has been known for its fishing, boat building, and farming businesses since the 1800s. The area now includes the recently annexed towns of Beechwood and Hightown. The first permanent settler in what is now Little Ferry was Nicholas Hesson who arrived in 1798. He built a small cabin in present day Beechwood Township and named it Hesson's Ferry after his father-in-law, David Hesson. In 1807 John Purdy settled near what is now the village of Hightown; he built a log cabin there on the banks of the Delaware River. By 1812 all three settlements were incorporated as one township: "Hesson's Ferry" (present day Beechwood Township), "Purdy's Landing" (now part of Hightown), and "New Hope" (later part of Hightown). In 1814 Isaac Lapp came to Little Ferry from Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania with his family; he soon erected a small farmstead on land that would eventually form part of present-day eastern Mercer County. Lapp became an important provider of goods along the Delaware River between Newark and Philadelphia; he also developed some commercial enterprises including lumbering and farming ventures. In 1825 Lapp sold his land at what is now Clinton Township to John Weiler for $3 per acre ($ in 2009 terms). Weiler organized a ferry service between Newark and Philadelphia which helped improve trade along the river corridor during this time period In 1828 William Fenton opened a store at what is now Clinton Avenue in Hightown; this became one of several early commercial businesses within Little Ferry boundaries. In 1830 Fenton married Marie Curran from Scotch Plains, NJ; they had two children: Anna Maria Fenton born in 1830 and Johnathan Fenton Jr., born in 1833. Fenton continued running his store until about 1840 when he moved to Ridgewood where he operated another small business until his death on October 14th, 1860 aged 73 years old. His wife ran their home business until her death also in 1860 aged 73 years old.. Johnathan Fenton Jr., son of William Fenton Sr., started operating familyowned carpentry businesses starting with Brothers Hammer & Chisel Company at Whatcom Avenue corner Pershing Street inside today’s West Chester University campus – adjacent to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital - starting around 1870 making him one of earliest successful entrepreneurs within Little Ferry boundaries.. Little Ferry is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Little Ferry comes from the Dutch "Lieve ferry" meaning "friendly ferry". The first permanent English settlement in what is now Middlesex County was established by Captain John Smith in 1614 as an outpost on the southern bank of Passaic River. In 1682, General James Monmouth built Fort Madison on opposite side ofriver and named it for his father-in-law, Sir George Carteret. At that time there were no bridges over the river and boats had to be transported across by men or horses teams pulled by oxen or dogs. From 1712 to 1727, Little Ferry was used as an open air military prison for British troops during King George's War (1712–1718). In 1834, a group of investors led by Nicholas Roosevelt founded the New York Central Railroad Company and began building tracks through Middlesex County. They called their new line "The Newark &ehudah RR". The town of Little Ferry became one of its initial stations and soon developed into a bustling transportation town with shops, restaurants and taverns serving travelers train arrivals and departures along with passenger service between Newark Liberty Terminal in Newark and points north including Scranton Township in Pennsylvania where goods were loaded onto trains for shipment to markets all over North America. In 1856, two years after NJ Transit started operations through its new railroad terminus at Newark Liberty Terminal, passengers traveling from Trenton Junction across the Delaware River had to transfer at Little Ferry station before boarding their locomotives to continue their journey northward viaNJ Transit's mainline network until they reached Paterson or Elizabethtown Junction near Philadelphia where they disembarked again for onward travel on local buses or cars ferried back acrossthe Delaware River to Trenton Junction. This transfers business continued until 1967 when Amtrak took over operation of NJ Transit's mainline system making Little Ferry obsolete as a terminal stop for passengers travelling between New York City and Philadelphia/Harrisburg/Washington Drexel University area.)
