Lindenwold is a town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. Lindenwold is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located adjacent to Newark Airport. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lindenwold were Dutch traders in 1624. In 1797, the French ceded this area to the British Empire as part of the Treaty of Paris. The British renamed it "New Brunswick". In 1814, an act was passed by the New Jersey Legislature which granted land comprising present-day Lindenwold and parts of Hackensack and Passaic Counties to James Wilson for his services in defense of America during the Mexican-American War. Wilson's donation included 3 acres (1 km2) west of present-day Market Street and 8 acres (3 hectares) east of Center Road. The first settler in what is now Lindenwold was John Starke who arrived on October 2, 1798 with his family from Great Britain via boat from Deptford Township along with 300 other colonists under George Washington's orders as part of General Robert Ewing's expedition against Spain on October 5th. He set up a farm on what are now West Side Highway and North Avenue near where he later built his home today known as Starke Manor House & Greenhouses which still stands today! On February 10, 1800, Abraham D'Auria bought 1 acre (0.40 km2) near Easton Pond from Nicholas Astor for $200 dollars! This was one of many purchases by D'Auria over the next few years which would lead him to become one of Middlesex County’s most successful farmers! On December 2nd 1800 Samuel Morse purchased 1/4 mile (0.50 km2) off Center Road betweenpresent-day North Avenue and Main Street from John de Mohrenschildt for $105 dollars! This purchase markedthe beginning of Middlesex County’s “Morse Place” development pattern that continues to this day! In 1801 Augustus KelleyPurchase dated January 12th1802 for $240 dollars!! This purchase markedthe beginningof McKenzee Place development pattern that continues to this day too

Here are some brief overviews of some key events from Lindenwold's past: 1889- The first post office was established in Lindenwold. 1947- The population of Lindenwold peaked at around 1,500 people. However, by the end of the decade it had declined to approximately 500 residents. 1980- In 1980, the town voted to change its name to Lindenwald after being offered the option by then Mayor John J. Rooney Jr.. 1984- A new elementary school was built inLindenwald and named after Mrs. Lillian Klingensmith who donated land for it. 1990- The pharmaceutical company Pfizer announced plans to build a plant in Lindenwald which would create much needed jobs within the community. However, only six months later when they revealed their plans, violence broke out between local residents and Pfizer employees overcontrol of business decisions within the plant - this led to Pfizer withdrawing their plans for the plant altogether . 1996- On October 30th,1996, a fire destroyed most of what remained of Lindenwald after starting in a ground level utility closet inside one of their buildings
