Lindenwold is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,965 at the 2010 census. Lindenwold is located on the border of Hunterdon and Burlington counties. It is part of the Camden-Newark Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to set eyes upon Lindenwold were Dutch settlers in 1614 who named it "Willemstadt". In 1837, an Englishman by the name of John Flinders Petrie discovered a natural gas field in what is now neighboring Morris Township and began exploration for land east of Newark and west of Camden. He named his find "Lindenwold" after Dr. Johann Gottfried Wilhelm von Lindenhof, a Danish scientist who had first discovered gas pockets near Hannover in 1746. The petrie family purchased some landholdings around what is now Lindenwold from Sir John Sinclair in 1841; this included much of what would become present-day Hunterdon County and parts of Burlington County. In 1868, when Rutgers University opened its new campus on Long Branch Creek north of Middlesex Junction, developers began to enter into development around that location with plans for numerous row homes, villas and other types of housing estates culminating in the founding of Lindenwalde borough in 1908 as one element within then newly created Hunterdon County government system. In 1924, when Morristown became an incorporated municipality within Hunterdon County, it annexed most territory lying eastward along Route 22 from Lindenwalde including much present-day Valley Forge Borough (now part of Irvington).
