In 1834, George Washington Hughes purchased land adjacent to present day Lindenwald Township from Nicholas Simons for $1,000 dollars (the purchase included 8 acres). He began construction on what would become his home here: Hughes House/Farmstead which still stands today and overlookstoday's township hall complex across Route 22 (now US 1) just north of the intersection with Interstate 287 and just east of Uptown Road. Construction continued during both world wars as munitions workers brought their families here for temporary living during wartime shortages elsewhere in America. After World War II ended however and new housing developments began popping up throughout Northeast Newark – many without connection to or knowledge of Hughes' former farmstead – he sold his holdings in 1945 and retired from farming altogether.
