Lindenwold is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 31,871. Lindenwold is located on the east side of Newark Bay and bordered by Hasbrouck Heights to the south, Caldwell Township to the west and north, and Rahway Township to the east. The borough was formed on February 14, 1920 from parts of Rahway Township. The first settler in what would become Lindenwold was John Burgess who came to what is now Lindenwold from Essex County in 1814. In 1868 he married Mary Ann Pugh (born 1831). They had six children: four sons and two daughters.received their land grant from Governor James Ketchum on November 25th of that year In 1915-16, $1 million were spent for improving transportation infrastructure within Middlesex County which included a new bridge over Newark Bay connecting Rahway Township with Lindenwold Borough. This opened up much of what is now known as The Strip District including today's part of Newark city limits to residents of Rahway Township and Caldwell Township as well as those living near Morristown Airport. This also created jobs throughout all five municipalities that were impacted with work being done at local factories such as American Can Company (now known as Alcoa), Chrysler Corporation’s plant in Morristown, Bakelite Corporation’s plant in Caldwell township (now closed) and even a few small businesses along Main Street prior to World War II when many people moved into larger townships like Union City or Passaic due to wartime shortages of goods such as food products The increase in vehicles commuting into downtown Newark helped cause rapid growth for both neighborhoods starting around 1950 until they reached an all time high during the late 1970s/early 1980s when many people left central business districts for suburban lifestyles following powerful economic expansions throughout New Jersey Many residents continue moving back into central business districts during recent decades although there has been some residential development announced or recently began at various locations including Edison Park Stadium across from Penn Station
Lindenwold was an early community in New Jersey, established in 1714. It was located on the western bank of the Raritan River, just east of present-day Union City. Lindenwold was a trading post and transportation hub for goods moving between the British colonies in North America and Europe. The original homes there were built by Dutch settlers, who soon after moved out due to religious persecution from England. The town's first school opened in 1718, and its first mayor was Nicholas Christoffersen. In 1727, the town granted land to John Woolridge for a plantation near what is now Newark. This new settlement quickly became known as Woolridge's Landing because of its proximity to Lindenwold. By 1740, Lindenwold had a population of 400 residents and had been renamed "Newark" after Newark Castle on Long Island where George Washington first met with the British Crown Prince at Mount Vernon (now Yorktown). In 1812, Lindenwold lost its charter as a borough because it failed to raise enough money to support itself through taxes. However, it regained its charter in 1816 and has been governed since that time by aldermen elected at large with no term limits. In 1931, Lyndhurst Township came into being adjacent to Newark; however, Lindenwoold continued to be governed by its own aldermen until 1974 when those powers were transferred to Newark City Council."
