In 1852, a rifle range was established in Lindenwold and Rifleman John S. Brownell began using his sights on firearms there. He became known as the father of firearm sights because he developed the use of adjustable sight turrets for rifles. In 1860, Rifleman Jno. Paulding installed a camera on his rifle stand to take pictures of target practice at the rifle range in Lindenwold. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lindenwold were Dutch traders in 1624. They named it "Verenigde Staten" (the United States) because they did not believe that land east of the Hudson River could be acquired by England from France and Spain for their own colony - this was known as the Crown Lands problem. On April 9, 1795, Congress passed an act entitled "An Act to establish a District of Columbia within the limits of Pennsylvania", which established Philadelphia as the capital of what is now Pennsylvania and included all of Delaware County including Lindenwold in its boundaries. The new district became known as Washington D.C., although some people continued to refer to Lindenwold as Verenigde Staten until 1881 when that name was changed back to Lindenwold after pressure from Hollanders who wanted their community's name taken away from them). In 1881, settlers on both sides of the Delaware River started moving into what is now northeastern Middlesex County and eastern Sussex County; most settled near present-day Union Mills (later White Sands), but a few miles south along Route 20 heuristics led some pioneers to settle beyond today's intersection of State Routes 22 and 23 (now called Broadwalk Avenue). Lindenwold, New Jersey is a small town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Lindenwold’s history can be traced back to 1795 when it was founded by Nicholas Linden and his family. The village of Lindenwold grew up around the original mill and farmstead which remain extant to this day. The first settlers in what is now Lindenwold were Nicholas Wendt and his wife Catharine Bechtel. In 1824, John Fenton bought land in what is now Lindenwald from Nicholas Wendt for $1,000. In 1850, George Washington Dennison purchased land from Dennison Brothers for $4,000. The town of Lindenwald was incorporated on January 1st of 1857. During World War II, Lindenwald played an important role as an air raid shelter due to its strategic location just outside of Brunswick Township along the Delaware River Valley between Newark and Philadelphia. The townsite remained active during the war with numerous factories that produced munitions being located there including Koppers Candy & Tobacco Company (now known as Pinnacle Foods) and Bethlehem Steel Corporation (now known as Carrier). Today, many businesses still operate inLindenwald including medical clinics, law offices, retailers and restaurants all clustered around downtown square called “The Square” which offers plenty of shopping opportunities as well as excellent views of the river valleyide scenery from several high-rise buildings nearby.
Lindenwold was founded in 1797 by Nicholas Linden and his wife, Mary. The town was named for the wooded area to the east of it. In 1802, Lindenwold became a borough and in 1903, it became a city.
