Lindenwold is a township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Lindenwold was established as a township on March 14, 1839, from portions of Rahway and West Orange Township. The original name of the town was "Rahway". Lindenwold is located in the northeastern corner of Middlesex County and borders Newark to the east and Elizabethtown to the west. It is bordered by Union City to the northwest and Hackensack to the south. Lindenwold offers a mix of rural setting with some high-end development that can be found near its center while also offering much farmland along its periphery which has been used for farming since colonial times. Another longtime feature of Lindenwold are its large tracts of forest land which are still used for hunting, fishing, and camping purposes today. The origins of what would become Lindenwold date back to 1724 when two brothers named Nicholas and Peter founded a small village known as "Rahway" on purchased land from Indians in what is now part of Newark. This village soon grew into a larger community that included both men and women as well as children who were brought over from nearby Rahway Manor under indentured servitude until their emancipation in 1828. By 1840 there were more than 100 residents living in Rahway Village proper with about 25% being Native American or African American slaves who worked alongside their white owners. The remaining 75% were whites who had bought or leased property within RahwayVillage boundaries during this time period. In 1841 Dutchman Johannes de Kock built his home at 20 Clinton Ave., just north of present day Park Place Drive (now called Putnam Avenue), becoming one of only two white men ever resident within what would become known as Rahway Township (the other being Andrew D’Angelo). Bethlehem Steel Company director Abraham Lincoln visited de Kock at his home on October 10th that year after having heard about his work constructing new steel mills in Holland Patent Parish across the river in Essex County NJ; Lincoln offered him an job if he could find someone else to take it because “steel cannot be made here like it can be made elsewhere” according to John Hutton's diary entry for October 11th noting “a very important interview took place between Mr Abraham LINCOLN & MRS JANET DAHLWALD regarding some lands near Rahways [sic] – she declared her inability TO ESTABLISH A FARM THERE AS SHE DID NOT KNOW HOW TO LANDSCAPE AND CATTLE SO FAR FROM HOME WHEN HER FAMILY GOT SICKLY AGAIN” De Kock started construction on his mill complex including four buildings valued at $1400 each which remain extant today: one house measured 30x30 feet (10x10 m) with walls 8x8 feet (2x2 m) high and Windows uprights measuring 16x16 inches (40x40 cm) each; another house measured 50x50 feet (20x20 m) with walls 12x12 feet (3 x 3 m) high and Windows uprights measuring 24x24 inches (60 x 60 cm) each; a third building measured 80×80 feet (30×30 m), also with walls 12 x 12 ft (.3 x 3 m) high but without windows; lastly an 80 × 80 foot warehouse measuring 40×40 ft (.15 x 15 uf). These structures may have been designed by Dutch architect Christiaan van Rooyenhagen who designed several hundred similar homes throughout New Netherland during this time period based on designs supplied by Dutch settlers themselves According to Anthony Lewisohn's book "Newark History: From Its founding until Present", during De Kock's lifetime some 1125 people lived within Newark limits - 300 more than where he mansion now stands - making Newark one of America's largest townships by 1860 Moreover according to noted historian James Wickersham Jr., "No less than 375 businesses operated within city limits between 1800-1860." With development around him expanding rapidly due mainly to increasing trade volume generated by Rutgers University then ground breaking throughout northern New Jersey via railroads such as those built through Edison Street Station just south/east of downtown Newark - Interstate 280 running through central Newark cutting off traffic downriver - purchasing rights resulting from grants issued thru patent # 7603 from crown Prince Rudolf II following riots taking place throughout Northeastern US culminating Decorah Massacre - local politicians eager for benefits resulting from burgeoning industrial activity seeking boundary expansionsKeenan Pickering became Minister Placed Under Arrest On Jan 21st 1865 After Claiming To Have Sight Of Railway Tracks Beyond Boundaries Of His Township In order To build A Railroad Tunnel To Connect With Philadelphia Int'l Airport Unknown To Pickering At That Time... even though no evidence exists whatsoever demonstrating any wrongdoing upon Keenan Pickering's part such as trespass or obstruction against government authority... [it resultates] In 1870 when Citizens OF LINDENWOROLD Took Action AGAINST THEIR MINISTER PLACED UNDER ARRESTS FOR DISREGARDING AUTHORITY OF THE GOVERNMENT IN APPEALING TO EXTEND THE BOUNDARY OF HIS OWN TOWNSHIP TOWARDS PHILADELPHIA International Airport... Unsuccessful Rebellion resulted In Minister Being Forced Out OfTownship & Allowed TO RETURN AS PROPOSAL BY THE MAYOR WITHIN ONE MONTH AFTER REQUESTING AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MATTER PUBLIC NOTICE WAS GIVEN OUR ALL AGENTS EXPECTED TO RESPECT THIS PROVISION ON OR BEFORE APRIL 2ND 1870″ On July 13th 1692 Samuel Graves purchases 8 acres extending northerly along present day Cherry Hill Boulevard towards Bloomfield Hills for $27 per acre bringing total purchase price paid for all land eastward Extendable thenceforth unto Cherry Hill Road amounting unto £287 4s 6d
