Lindenwold is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Lindenwold is located on the eastern border of the township of Northumberland and it shares borders with Mount Laurel to the north, Hopewell Township to the east, and Unincorporated Borough of Allendale to the south. The name Lindenwold probably derived from Old English "Lingonwald," meaning "forested place." The first settler in what is now Lindenwold may have been Nicholas de Laye who arrived there in 1664. In 1714 John Haines moved from Gloucester into Mercer County and purchased a parcel of land east of present-day Lindenwold from Nicholas de Laye. A mill was built on this tract by Haines in 1720. United States troops under General George Washington landed at Gloucester on October 11, 1777 during the American Revolutionary War and destroyed all mills in that town but one; those machines were used for flour production until 1827 when they were replaced by steam engines. The post office was established at Lindenwold in 1829, serving as an outpost on the then-new Trenton–Northumberland Railroad. By 1860, only 5 residents lived there; by 1900 only 4 remained; however, many people made their homes there after moving away from larger towns or rural areas due to dwindling farmland or other economic opportunities. When service began operating between Trenton and Camden through what is now South Brunswick Township starting on May 12th 1902 (the date old US Route 22 intersected NJ Route 10), business quickly increased along with development around what became known as Main Street which ran west from Trenton Avenue past today's Schoolhouse Road into Northumberland Township (then called “Bridgewater”). On January 1st 1922 work began on building a new shopping center just northeast of today's Post Office offcoming US routes 222/10 (now partof South Brunswick Township) which would become known as “Lindenwald Plaza” before being razed in 2002 following Hurricane Andrew's devastating damage offshore causing $15 million worth of damage and loss of life among others nearshore communities along that coast including much of Ocean County during that time period - some blame this particular storm for driving many families inland throughout southeastern NJ looking for protective terrain amidst bumper-to-bumper traffic conditions caused largely by heavy rains upstream resulting also lane closures within certain sections not long afterwards which impacted businesses essentially shuttering prior results & resulted over 400 job losses statewide resultant contributing to numerous social issues ensuing locally particularly amongst youth unemployment rates reaching catastrophic proportions concurrent with very little investment seeing these various negative consequences both immediately preceding landfall & continuing thereafter leading ultimately increasing crime rates especially within downtown areas eventually exacerbating roadway deficiencies (& rising gasoline prices) back then becoming one key factor leading directly to elevated revenues & finally enabling our municipally funded public school system (& several private schools) remaining operational thru present day despite significant budget cuts resulting primarily impactful increases across most major grade levels since 2009 - making it one such successful community spirit booster program - having helped support more than 2 dozen local businesses participating therein + countless dozens more additional jobs indirectly via indirect taxes generated thereby
