Linden, NJ is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Linden is located on the banks of the Delaware River and is adjacent to Newark and Paterson. Linden's name comes from an old Dutch word meaning "linde" (a tree), which in turn derives from the Proto-Germanic word *linda. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 6,711 people, 2,959 households, and 1,953 families residing in the town. The population density was 3,491 people per square mile (1,362/km²). There were 3,974 housing units at an average density of 1,622 per square mile (608/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White alone; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; and 2% from two or more races. Linden is a borough in New Jersey, United States. It was formed from the merger of three other towns on May 2, 1874. Linden and its sister town of Uniondale were both part of Bergen County until 1912 when they became part of Essex County. The population was 27,871 at the 2010 census. The first European settlers in what is now Linden were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1664. They built a trading post near present-day Uniondale and named it "New Netherland." In 1702, English colonists founded Princeton on the grounds that this place would be open to them as well because of its strategic location at the outlet of the Trenton River. In 1784, British forces burned down Newark's Fort Lee after overrunning and conquering that city during the American Revolution. That same year, Newark merged with Rahway to form Rahway Township. On October 15, 1874, two weeks after the opening of New Jersey's statehood ceremonies, Linden incorporated as a borough due to intense demand for land in an expanding county that had just become fully organized under New Jersey law following President Ulysses S. Grant's re-election in November 3rd year as America's first African American president
Linden was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Linden, a Presbyterian minister. The settlement was named for the elegant trees that grew near the village's namesake, Lenore Woods. Linden quickly became a small town, with only a few hundred residents at its peak. But it continued to grow and prosper until 1851, when it merged with neighboring Southwick to form the new township of Linden-Southwick. The merger created large industry and commerce in the town, which remain important today. In 1931, Linden became an incorporated municipality and has since grown more prosperous still as a bedroom community for NJ suburbs east of New York City.
