Linden was founded in 1776 by two Dutch settlers, Hendrick and Jannetje van Nordt. The first European to set foot in the area was Hendrick de Vries, who built a cabin on the east side of what is now Linden Boulevard. In 1779, John Bullock and his family settled in nearby East Brunswick and began farming land that they would later sell to other families. In 1814, the town of Linden became part of Middlesex County after New Jersey was admitted as a United States state. The population of Linden grew rapidly during the early 1800s due to its location at the intersection of Routes 9 and 20. By 1828, there were more than 100 residents living inLinden Borough. The borough's first mayor was James Auld (1828-35). In 1838, Robert Bogue became the first mayor of Linden Borough while serving concurrent terms with Middlesex County government. Bogue served until 1849 when he entered into private life and died at age 80 years old. The first female Mayor in NJ history was Cora DeLorme (1929-31). From 1850-1874, three mayors served out each term: George Brown (1850-51), Elias Howe (1854-55), and Augustus Kelley (1875-77). During this time period office holders included five women to date; only one woman has been elected as mayor in NJ since then –Margaret Cannon– but she currently resides outside of New York City where she holds an Honorary Doctorate from Fordham University School of Law
