Linden, New Jersey is a small town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The population was 7,451 at the 2010 census. Linden is one of the oldest towns in New Jersey and has been settled since 1674. The name "Linden" comes from the Dutch word "Linde" meaning wooded hillock, and it was anglicized to "Linden Park." The first Europeans to visit what is now Linden were Frenchmen under Captain Pierre Duguay de L'Isle who landed on November 9, 1714 on the present-day site of Linden. He named the island after his friend and mentor, Monsieur de Lindt (1668-1737), a Swiss gentleman traveler and botanist who had visited America many times before. For more than two centuries after Captain Pierre's landing, various English families lived on or near Fort du Valais (now called White Sands) on the southern tip of Manhattan Island while they developed their trade with Spain at that location. In 1764 John Montresor sold land along the Hudson River to George Washington for £2000 which he used as barracks for troops during his aborted attempt to conquer Manhattan Island. In 1772 Colonel James Callender bought some additional land north of present day Interstate 95 opposite Newark Airport for $2 per acre from Nicholaso Pappalardo who had also purchased land adjacent to Newark Airport from Sir John Johnson in 1759. In 1802 Nathan Hale served sentence in Sing Sing Correctional Facility located at what is now Bound Brook Township when he was released from prison following his conviction for treason against King George III in 1799/1800 known as The Affair at Boston Neck where he met Nathanael Greene but did not give him any information about British plans or resources inside Massachusetts Bay Colony until after their victory over Howe's forces at Saratoga Bridge on October 19th 1800). After serving time Hale moved westward into Canada where he became an influential settler early in this country's history. After living briefly in Canada circa 1803-1804 Hale returned eastward via Wilderness Road then westward via Watertown Path across Mohawk Lake into northeastern Pennsylvania whence he founded Hazleton (now Phila.) In 1807 he arrived upon reaching Philadelphia which led him later that year to establish himself there as one of America's most successful mercantile interests through his operation of The Stores Company which grew intoPhiladelphia merchant banking powerhouse First National Bank&Company LLC today known as One Penn Plaza Incorporated & Co.,Incorporated). Linden is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,070 at the 2010 census. Linden was incorporated as a borough on April 16, 1892 and became a city on November 3, 1925. The name of the city comes from an Elmira woodlawn named "Linden" after Sir John Lubbock (1786-1864), 1st Baronet of Letchworth in Hertfordshire England. The history of Linden dates back to 1795 when two Congregationalists families moved to what is now Linden from Perth Amboy Township in southeastern New Jersey. They named their settlement "Willow Grove", but it was renamed "Linden" in honor of Governor Nicholas Livingston (1685-1736) and his wife Lady Henrietta Putnam (1688-1747). In 1802 the community had 5 inhabitants and by 1815 it had grown to 20 with 7 houses. In 1848 there were only three residents living in Linden; one family ran a gristmill that year and another took over the sawmill run by their predecessors the Haldanes. By 1860 there were 22 people living here including six tavernkeepers who operated eight stores along Water Street between Clinton Avenue and Union Road across from present day Fifth Third Bank HQ on Park Avenue South. That same decade also saw construction of what is today Park Avenue South beginning with the erection of what are now four streetlights at that intersection in 1870 which led to increased business along that stretch of road as well as more residences being built around that time including five duplexes on Park Avenue South between Sixth Street West and Seventh Street East within twenty years after its first completion west of Clinton Avenue where today we find most commercial buildings located today including some old churches dating back to before 1800 such as First Presbyterian Church which still stands today adjacent to First National Bank building erected c1900 which is one example numerous others can be found throughout downtown Newark skyline near riverfront including Starke Inn circa 1830s known for its large octagonal fireplace inside current day restaurant called Belk's circa 1840s next door both original structures remain intact today - Newark's oldest extant post office building still standing northeast corner Market Square
Linden was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Linden. It became an incorporated town in 1834. The first post office at Linden opened in 1835, and the first store was built in 1840. In 1865, the borough of Linden merged with neighboring municipalities of Harrison Township and Rahway Township to form a new municipality, which continued to be called Linden until 1984.
