Linden, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. Linden was incorporated on March 4, 1887. The population was 24,898 at the 2010 census. The borough contains the main shopping center and other larger communities in the township. The name of the town originated from a large Linden tree that stood near where it now stands. In 1881, a group of men who were set to clear land for farming found a large tree standing tall and full of fruit. They named their new settlement after the tree and began to build homes around it. The first store opened in 1889. In 1908, Linden became an unincorporated community when its own post office discontinued operations due to lack of mail service. It had been part of Middlesex Township since 1846 when it was included within Bergen County as part of South Hackensack Township. On July 1, 1927, all but one block within the Borough boundaries were added to neighboring Rahway Township along with adjacent parts of Greenville Township and Atlantic City Beach Township while Stillwater and West Babylon remained municipalities separate through much of this decade-long annexation process. On May 8th 1948 referendum voters approved annexing stillwater into Rahway Township along with West Babylon which then merged with Linden on October 11th 1948 becoming what is now known as Rahway/Linden annexed by Middlesex County NJ .

The nicknames for Linden are "The Village" and "The Garden". Linden's history can be traced back to 1795 when the Dutch founded a small trading post known as Hooghlykirk on the west bank of the Passaic River in what is now Bloomfield Township. In 1837, John Stevens erected a sawmill at which he operated until his death in 1849. His son-in-law Nicholas Long built the first structure in what is now Linden that year and named it after himself - Long's Mills or "The Old Mill." A gristmill was added to the complex around 1840 and by 1850 there were five mills operating inLinden. However, because of tidal waves caused by Hurricane Sandy (2012), all five mills were destroyed within two days following the storm damage. In 1892, proposals for incorporation of Linden were made by three different groups: The Citizens Union (founded by George Kapp and Hiram Sibley), The Republican Club (founded by Nathan Clifford) and The American Civic League (founded by Julius Rosenwald). On April 14th,1892 incorporation took place with William Fenton as mayor and James Paulding as treasurer. At that time Linden had a population of only 10 people; today it has over 21 thousand residents! During World War II many residents left to fight overseas but many returned home during Victory bonuses given to those who enlisted during that war or through Processing Centers set up along Route 66 shortly after V-E Day which celebrated America’s victory over Germany/Japan! After World War II many new homes were constructed throughout town while some older homes continued to be used until they became too outdated or sold for scrap metal! Today much of town still retains its original architecture including several churches dating back to early 19th century!
