Other notable institutions include Presbyterian Hospital (founded in 1911), Lakewood University (established as Trenton State Teachers College in 1925), Asbury Park Press & Star Newspaper Company (founded in 1926 as one of the first newspapers published statewide), and Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library & Museum. The first settlers to the area were farmers who arrived from England in the early 18th century. The first town in what is now Middlesex County was called "Ferry" because it connected two ferryboats that crossed the Hackensack River. In 1787, General John Forbes built Fort Mercer on land he granted to Colonel James Wilkinson. The fort served as a military base for many years and also housed a school and store. In 1814, Fort Mercer was abandoned and its buildings were destroyed by a storm. In 1825, Linden incorporated as an independent township due to lack of representation in the then-central Middlesex County government. At that time there were only six municipalities in Middlesex County with populations over 1,000 people: Clifton (1), Harrison Township (2), Glassboro Township (3), Paterson (4), Princeton (5) and West Orange Township (6). A fire destroyed part of Linden during the morning of September 4, 1830 which caused widespread panic throughout the town until it could be extinguished by nightfall. This event is commonly cited as one of the most destructive fires in American history. Linden grew rapidly during this period with several new businesses opening up including bakery/canned goods company Blythe Bros., dry goods store Fidelity & Co., lumberyard Empire Lumber Company and grocery stores The Gudeons Brothers Store and Smith’s Grocery Depot。The death of President James Kappey in 1840 led to increased political polarization within Middlesex County which culminated with countywide riots over free trade policies enacted by Kappey’s successor George Washington Butler This type of tension would continue through much of antebellum America until it began to dissipate following American annexation of Mexico following Mexican–American War in 1846 Afterward, business slowed down while some residents moved away or left for better opportunities elsewheredue to changes taking place within both America and Europe at this time During World War II there was an increase in manufacturing jobs due to wartime production shortages ; however these jobs eventually disappeared after Cold War economic boom began . After 1945 Linden experienced rapid growth with suburban development beginning along Route 9 across from downtown followed by incorporation into South Jersey City forms 1959

A store and post office were built in 1802, and the village became a Township on October 15, 1825. In 1870, Linden began to grow rapidly due to its location at the junction of two wagon roads that led to Philadelphia and New York City. By 1915, Linden had over 1,000 residents. On February 14th of that year, Linden's incorporation as a Village was granted by the Township Committee.
