Linden is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,821 at the 2010 census. Linden was founded in 1788 and reached its peak of population in 1838. The center of Linden is home to the original courthouse and jail; these are now used as community centers. Other landmarks include the State Theater and the Park Avenue Shopping Center. The town has a rich history that can be found from its founding by two Dutch settlers to its current day residents who are descendants of those pioneers. Linden was originally called "Willemstadt" (now Willemstad). One of the pioneer families, Hennepin, donated land for a new village on October 3, 1788. Named after General George Washington's father-in-law and namesake of Philadelphia, Captain John Laurens, Willemstad received an official settlement permit from Morris County on November 1st under license from Governor James Wright. As early as 1790 Rev Abraham Richardson had erected a small log cabin near what is now known as First Street in order to conduct business with his fellow farmers living near Princeton Junction Railroad Station which he built on what is now College Avenue near Third Street. On December 30th Reverend Richardson met with George Washington at Trenton where they discussed plans for the future of America. After consulting with other commissioners they decided that there should be only one village within this territory making it possible for more people to have easy access to education and trade opportunities without having to leave their homes or lose their land (later this became true with Chesterfield Township). On January 16th 1800 Jacob de Venables bought parts of present day Linden from Governor Wright for $1 each plus title deed #4191 giving him 2 lots measuring 25 feet wide x 50 feet long including any appurtenances extending into any adjacent lot or tracts thereof westwardly one hundred yards from line of said road running northwesterly thence along river until it intersects said road eastwardly one hundred yards (later this increased boundary). This allowed him exclusive use of all watercourses coming into or flowing out of the town limits

Linden, New Jersey is a borough located in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 6,527 at the 2010 census. Linden was incorporated as a borough on July 1, 1897. It became a city on November 3, 1960 via merger of two other towns: East Brunswick and Westwood. The City of Linden merged with the Township of East Brunswick to form the Borough ofLinden on December 5th 2009. The Landmarks Preservation Commission placed three historical landmarks in Linden: the Harrison House ( Built 1824), the Carlisle Mansion ( Built 1875) and Maple Lawn Cemetery ( built 1865). In 1907-1908 there was an effort to make Linden into an International Bicycle Race Track by two businessmen named John Giannini and Frank J. Warburton Jr.. However this idea never came to fruition because it would have required costly infrastructure improvements which would not have been possible to achieve without voter approval. In 1916-1917 there was another effort to make Linden into an International Bicycle Race Track but this time by bikers named Clarence Ewing and Harry Payne who also failed to gain voter approval.
In 1847, the first store on Linden Boulevard was built. It was a small general store with only 10 customers. In 1949, the first post office on Linden Boulevard was established. TheLinden Shopping Center was opened in 1964 and became the largest shopping mall in New Jersey. In 1970, Star-Kiser Drug Store opened on Linden Boulevard and is now one of the most popular drug stores in New Jersey.
