Linden, New Jersey is a small town located in Morris County, New Jersey. The population was 3,711 as of the 2010 census. Linden is home to the Linden Hills Elementary School and the Linden Hills Middle School. The community was founded in 1892 by Loyalists from what is now York County, Pennsylvania. The first settler was John Fritchey. Linden became a township in 1900 and then a village in 1910. The name originated with two trees at the center of town – one called "Linden" and the other "Hills". When residents voted to change their name to Linden on April 12, 1912, they were following a trend among many small towns in America that had shortened their original names because of becoming more popular or due to competition from larger communities. In 1933, when Morristown Township was merged into Morris County, Linden became part of that county as well. In 1951, when it became an incorporated municipality again (after being unincorporated for several years), Linden annexed parts of Longmeadow Township which lies east of its boundaries along Route 22 between Moonachie and Parsippany/Swartz Creek valleys. As a result of this annexation however, much of the north-central portion of Lindenhurst Road between Moonachie Valley and Swartz Creek Valley was also lost to annexation although some areas were restored within10 years after incorporation (e.g., part of Parkview Drive). Today much less than half that distance remains unoccupied rural land currently unused by residents living within city limits while most development takes place along eastern portions including both streets bordering moonachie valley westward until swartz creek valley eastward across from sunnyside park

Linden is one of the oldest towns in New Jersey and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 350 years. The first European to visit Linden was Giovanni da Verrazzano on October 24, 1524, during his exploration of the Delaware River. In 1764, General George Washington and his army passed through Linden while they were besieging Princeton. On February 1, 1814, Colonel John A. Macready's company of United States Volunteers fought a battle against 600 militia troopers under General Andrew Jackson at Fort Dearborn in what is now called "Old Fort Dearborn." In 1846–1847, when the state of New Jersey became a U.S. territory following its purchase from France, part of Bergen County (now northern Hudson County) was transferred to become parts of Newark and Middlesex counties (now southern Hudson County). As this occurred without any general election or vote by local residents as required by law, an election for township trustees took place on March 3rd; all but three trustees were appointed by Governor Morris Nixon with no vote cast in support or opposition. One trustee (John Ewing) voted not to accept nomination and resigned from office; this event is cited as one reason why township government operated without any formality until after American independence in 1776. Linden was incorporated as a village on April 14th 1870 by order of the New Jerseystate governor John Dunkerley upon request from Mayor Abraham Lincoln Sweetman who had formed a committee to recommend incorporation because he felt that it would be beneficial for business development and cultural purposes within the community primarily serving Northwestern New Jersey interests rather than those within Middlesex County which he saw as more important to his constituents The first mayor was Abram Lincoln Sweetman followed by James Whelan who held office until 1888 when he ran unsuccessfully for president on the Democratic ticket with Grover Cleveland Whelan served two terms before being elected supervisor in 1895 George Fenton then served two terms before becoming acting mayor effective November 4th 1898 due to health concerns caused by influenza pandemic From 1907-1909 Alfred Payson led an effort to have electric lights installed throughout the community After World War I many new homes were built along Route 30 including several large garage/condo complexes which continue into present day . In 1922 plans were made for a main street linking all six villages with shopping centers located at either end resulting in Main Street being diverted away from original routing near Lake Placid through what is now known as "Newark Avenue" while much larger businesses continued along original routes
