The store’s proprietor, John Ballou, was the first person to sell firearms in America. In 1825, Cornelius Vanderbilt founded American Steam Navigation Company with his brother Samuel in Linden as its headquarters. This company became one of the most powerful maritime interests in America. They built a steamship line called the “Nelson” which transported goods across the ocean. One of their ships sank but this did not stop them from expanding their business into other areas such as shipping munitions overseas during World War I and Prohibition years later. In 1903-1904, an enterprising group of businessmen named George Carlin bought land in Linden Township for $2 per acre. Carlin started what is now known as George Carlin Enterprises Incorporated (GCEI). GCEI manufactured radio shows that aired on WINS Radio Station (now WPVI) throughout New Jersey until 1978 when it merged with CBS Corporation to form CBS Corporation–NewJersey Broadcasting Company (CBSNJBC). GCEI was also responsible for developing many new entertainment products including movies, games and sitcoms that continue to be produced today by CBS Corporation–NewJersey Broadcasting Company (CBSNJBC). Linden Township, New Jersey was created in 1812. The township is named after Colonel James Linden of the 1st Regiment of Foot. Linden was a part of Hunterdon County until its creation as part of Middlesex County in 1838. In 1896, the boroughs of Camden and Paterson were merged into Linden Township, with all inhabitants within Camden becoming part of that municipality. In 1912, the boroughs of Cherry Hill and Newark were merged into Linden Township as well. The township has a population of 394 today and covers an area of 21 square miles (59 square kilometers). It borders Essex County to the north, Hunterdon County to the east, Union County to the south and Atlantic City to the west. Most residents are commuters who use Interstate 95 or Route 9 east-west for transportation. There are also several small businesses located within Linden Township which provide services such as grocery stores, gas stations and daycare centers. The township is home to minor league baseball team Trenton Thunder and also enjoys a small amount of tourism from items like waterfalls and lakes found throughout its boundaries.
Linden is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,495 at the 2010 census. Linden was incorporated as a borough on April 14, 1915.
