Linden is a borough in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. Linden was created on December 12, 1871 from portions of Middletown Township and South Orange Township. The first settler in today's Linden was Andrew McMahon who arrived there with his family in 1798. He and others platted out a small township - which still exists to this day as part of Essex County - but named it after their home town of Dunster in Ireland (though they never set foot there). The original township's boundaries were slightly expanded when sections of Middletown and West Orange Township were annexed by Linden during the late 19th century as populations within those municipalities continued to grow along with land values. No one knows for sure what caused the great fire that destroyed most of Dunster about two decades later on November 20, 1873; however some historians believe it may have been caused by a lightning strike or an incendiary device set off by someone angry over some disagreement in the community. Whatever the cause, fortunately no lives were lost and only minor damage occurred due to the intense heat generated by the fire; however, it remains one of Linden’s most beloved historical memories because it so tragically changed everything around town - including how people lived and how villages became towns overnight! In 1886, local physician Dr Samuel Morse donated land east of Center Street to make room for what would become our municipal library (named after him) – thus beginning what would become one of our most cherished civic institutions here at Linden – something that residents continue to enjoy today! In 1907-08 another large donation from Mr & Mrs Ladd made possible our present football stadium – now known as PPL Park – which has hosted many memorable games throughout its history including Super Bowl XXXIV (1992), AFC Championship Game (2006), College Football Playoff National Championship Game (2018) and more! Today Lindsay is known for its vibrant arts scene with dozens upon dozens of galleries and museums totaling over 100+, plus countless artist studios/working spaces available all year round! Linden, New Jersey is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey. The population was 3,856 at the 2010 census. Linden is located on the north shore of Lake Ontario and straddles the border of Middlesex and Union counties. The first European settlement in what is now Linden Township was made by French colonists in 1685. The township was named for Nicholas de Linde, a Dutchman who had settled in America in 1624. The town was established as a village on April 17, 1881, when it amalgamated with other towns in Mercer County to form the new municipality of Unionville. Linden has been home to many famous people over its history- including George Washington and Thomas Edison- but it still retains its small-town feel today. In addition to its rich history, Linden also offers some beautiful scenery including rolling hills and pristine waterways that make for great hiking or swimming opportunities.
In 1795, the area that is now Linden was part of Burlington Township. The first settler in what is now Linden was Nicholas Biddle, who built a cabin on the banks of the Raritan River in 1796. In 1814, a small town called Burlington was established on the same site and remained so until 1925. The township was formed from parts of several other townships in 1834 and at its peak had about 1,500 residents. Linden's history began with major events such as the Linden Fire of 1850 which destroyed most of the downtown business district and caused great financial damage to the community. The fire also helped to start Linden's growth as an agricultural center with many new farms being developed along Route 9 between 1840 and 1860. After World War II, Linden experienced rapid growth due to its location as an important military airfield during both World Wars I and II. Many new homes were constructed in this period including some that still stand today. Linden has experienced many different types of development over its years, but has always been home to a variety of businesses and families. Despite this diversity, there have been few large-scale changes to the community since it first emerged as a small village in early 1800s.
