Dutch colonists began settling in what is now Hunterdon County in 1664. In 1714, George Washington passed through this area on his way to Trenton during the French and Indian War. James Logan purchased some land around present-day Linden from John Armstrong for £100 in 1722. The town of Newark was founded by British forces under Major General Edward Braddock nearpresent-day Morristown on July 14, 1776 during the American Revolutionary War after Battle of Princeton where General George Washington led a force against British cavalry under Lieutenant Colonel John Forbes. On October 1, 1854, when Morris Township was formed from parts of Essex and Middlesex Townships (now part of Union City), Linden became an incorporated village within Morris Township; it remained so until 1955 when it became an unincorporated township within Hunterdon County. On May 5, 1954, all but two precincts (the precinct at which downtown Linden sits) ofMorris Township were annexed by neighboring Union City; as a result, all Village residents within Union City were also automatically reclassified as residents ofLinden although they technically lived in Morris Township until 1955. Although there are no buildings remaining from before 1854 which could be dating back to that time period or anyone living in or aroundLinden before then - most likely because there wasn't any real development here until after 1854 - people continue to descend into town every day for their morning cup of Joe or their afternoon cheese sandwich at local businesses like Bamberger's Bakery or Post Office Square since those days are still very much alive and well here! Today’s lively community atmosphere can be traced back even further back to 1874 when one Mr. Fenton decided he wanted to start a school here – starting with just 10 students – so he built himself a small schoolhouse out front on Main Street! From that point forward everything has grown exponentially! It’s not only locals who have been keeping things alive over these years – visitors come too! A lot has changed since then including technology playing a big role – but no matter how you slice it, everyone here remains friendly and welcoming regardless of whatever your past may have been!

In 1802, the village of Linden Heights and the surrounding rural area were annexed by the new township of Linden. In 1824, a post office was established at Linden and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. In 1845, two miles north of Linden on Route 9, a gristmill operated by Elijah Hicks became the first Cornish mill in America. In 1851, an engine shop and wagon repair shop were built at what is now known as Maplecroft Road (Route 9). These shops continued to be used until 1954 when they were converted into a home. The machinery still remains today on display at Maplecroft Road museum.
