Lincoln Park is a public park in the borough of Jersey City, in the New York City metropolitan area. The park opened on May 10, 1889, as Lincoln Park Reserve. The first site for Lincoln Park Reserve was a tract of woodland north of Hackensack River that belonged to the Dix family. In 1887, the Manchester Land Company donated 3/4 mile (1 kilometer) of land east of Newark Avenue between Clinton Street and Lenox Road to form what would become Lincoln Park. On October 15, 1888, Mayor John Fenton dedicated the park with a speech in which he mentioned "the great president who had just been assassinated." In 1905, Congress granted funding for an permanent pond at the eastern edge of Lincoln Park Reserve; this was later named Roosevelt Pond. In 1916-1917, part of Newark Avenue between Clinton Street and Lenox Road were replaced by a new footway called South Boulevard which served as one side of what is now Central Parkway. This avenue became known as “Lincoln Boulevard” due to its connection with President Abraham Lincoln's route from Washington D C to Jersey City during his visit there on July 4th 1865. As early as 1885, efforts were being made to create a formal open space adjacent to Newark Avenue between Clinton Street and Lenox Road within present-day Lincoln Park Reserve. A committee formed by members of the city government submitted plans for what would eventually become today's main entrance plaza featuring an ornate marble gateway flanked by Ionic columns supporting a dome crowned by an octagon roof: these plans were approved in 1886 but not built until 1893 when Frederick Law Olmsted designed and constructed them for $2 million dollars using Public Works Administration funds available under Reconstruction Finance Act legislation enacted following America's victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House.) It should be noted that while much groundwork had been laid for what would become today's park before President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 14 1865 – including donations from many landowners in northeastern Jersey City – it wasn't until 1893 that Olmsted actually began construction on what we now know as Central Parkway - taking advantage of wartime restrictions ensuring that only federally funded projects could be undertaken within New York City limits without fear thereof being subject to local opposition or condemnation proceedings
