Kearny, New Jersey is a town in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. Kearny was first settled in 1755 by English colonists as KEARNY Township. The name derived from the Native American word kawneh (kah-wuhn-eh), meaning "place of deer." Kearny began to be developed as a village in 1811 and incorporated as a town on May 20, 1821. Its name derives from its location along the Delaware River and Derry Road which ran through it before it became part of Newark. In 1830, Kearny had 1,700 residents and was one of six townships in Harrison County that formed part of the new state of New Jersey. On July 14th, 1861, Kearny voted to become an open seat on the Rutgers University Board of Trustees after 9 other townships in Hudson County also voted to do so. In 1902, Kearney was hit by an express train that derailed and destroyed several homes near its intersection with Utopia Road. As a result, much development took place around this site during what is now known as “The Great Train Crash” – including construction of Route 66 between Camden and Morristown – which saw many businesses relocated to nearby White Sands National Monument during that time period (the monument still stands). On October 15th 1998 two gunmen opened fire outside the Statehouse Annexe located just off Main Street in Kearny while legislators were meeting there for their regular weekly session; no one was killed or injured but three people were held hostage inside for hours until negotiators could gain entry into the building without incident before all officers arrived and terminated the standoff at about 10pm local time subsequent to which no arrests were made; this event remains(to date) one of NJ's most heinous mass shootings however due largely to lack evidence linking any specific individual or group with terrorist/terrorist sympathies or motive Alternate names: "The Massacre at Statehouse Annex"
