Kearny is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,902 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous town in Monmouth County and the seventh most populous town in New Jersey after Camden, Trenton, Paterson, Long Branch, and Seaside Heights. Kearny was founded by Dutch colonists in 1664 as part of what is now Upper Monmouthshire Township; it was named for Captain John Kearny who fought against English forces during the American Revolution. The first settlement in what is now Kearny dates back to 1664 when two companies of Dutch colonists were sent from Rotterdam to settle land that lay between present-day Uniondale and Pompton Lakes. The name "Kearny" originated with Captain John Kearney who fought against English forces during the Revolutionary War and had been commissioned by Governor Nicholasidas van Dongen to lead a unit of fifty soldiers into battle on October 25th, 1677 near Perth Amboy. After being wounded at the Battle of Bunker Hill he retreated back to his Regiment under cover of darkness until morning whereupon he rejoined his regiment and led them at the Battle of Saratoga which ended with their victory over British troops under General James Howe. In 1701 Captn John Kearney's fatherland's first Permanent Resident arrived here from Holland; Pieter Biellinckx (or Bielicke) who had come over as part of a group that included Johannes de Graaf (Johannes deGraaff), Hendrick Claessenvelt (Hendrik Claessenvelt), Jan Baptista Vosburght(Jan Baptistus Vosburght), Gerritszoon Hooftman (Gerritszoon Houtman) & Cornelius Jansenzen alias De Jongh alias Van der Kolk (Cornelius Johannes D’eongham). Pieter Biellincx landed on November 2nd but did not stay long as he went straight off boat to start trading goods with local resident Wouter Carteret whose cottage may still be seen today on old Route 9 just west of where Main Street meetsRoute 10 outside of Kearny proper limits .Wouter Carteret himself also settled Downeast corner lot next door to his house opposite current day intersection Of Grand Avenue And routes 9 & 10 On September 26th 1701 Captn John Kearney married Maria Carpentier daughter of Adriaan Carpentier Jr., one half brotherof Pierre Carpentier Sieur d'Esperance Bayley who held 5200 acres along Eastern Shore border between Delaware Co., NJ & Maryland Co., MD having inherited it from his father French Huguenot ancestor Pierre Carpentier Sieur d'Esperance Bayley born about 1663 at Raton Point Light House MD who emigrated from Normandy France with his family circa 1700 Maria Carpentier was born about May or June 1701 aroundthe same time as her husband Captn John Kearney she married secondly on or about October 6th 1711/12 abovementioned Peter Stroud an Ulster Scotsman living near Bound Brook Township NJ also sonnetured ashore on Sandy Hook River NJ sometime before December 1st 1700 [Wouter Stroud died unmarried circa 1815] ADMIRAL JOHN KEARNY 3rd GENERATION

Kearny was a small town in New Jersey until the early 1800s. It is now a ghost town, and its only remaining landmark is the Kearny Bank. Kearny was founded by John Kearny in 1774 as an agricultural village on the southern border of Monmouth County. The first settler to arrive in what is now Kearny was Peter Lewisohn, who arrived in 1775. John Kearny died in 1806 and his son, James Fenton, took over the land and family business. In 1810, Fenton married Sarah Ayer and they started to build a home on their property which still stands today. They also built a log church which still stands today. In 1814, after taking over from his father as manager of the bank, James Fenton opened up what is now known as The White Eagle Tavern which served as a local watering hole for farmers and others during America's Revolutionary War period. In 1830-31, he also began construction of what is now called The Old State House here which served as his residence until it burned down in 1835. The town of Kearny experienced some sporadic population growth throughout its history but it didn't really take off until after World War II when many people came to work at nearby Middletown or New Brunswick because of wartime shortages of goods coming back into the United States from abroad. However, by 1955 all that remained were ruins and memories of those who once lived there
Kearny was founded in 1764 by Captain John Kearny. The town was named for Colonel James Kearny, who had been a captain in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Colonel Kearny's wife, Deborah, donated land to the town and construction began on what is now the Kearneytown Hall building in 1765. The first store opened in 1768. In 1772, a new courthouse was built and in 1806, a school was erected. In 1814, General Israel Putnam moved his headquarters from Princeton to Kearny and it became an important military post. The town declined after that point and has since disappeared from history.
