The Kearny Rifle and Pistol Club was organized on October 4, 1856 in Kearny, New Jersey. The original members of the club were John S. Gorman, Alonzo J. Morton, Pte. George H. Ladd, Capt. Charles Bache and Lewis Wesson who purchased a rifle at an auction in 1857. Wesson served as president of the club from 1861 to 1865 and died in office after a long career with the New York Central Railroad Company. The club acquired its present name on November 14th, 1887 when it joined forces with the Kearny Rifle and Pistol Association (KRPA) to form the American Federation of Sporting Clubs (AFSC). Kearny Rifles played an important role in the American Revolution as they were used by both sides in battles including Saratoga Springs (1777), Monmouth Junction (1814) and Trenton Heights (1846). In addition to their rifles, the club also developed pistols which became very popular during this time period due to their accuracy and easy handling. During World War I there was a large increase in demand for sniper rifles thanks to developments such as machineguns and artillery fire that made spotting targets much more difficult than it had been during earlier conflicts. By 1865, Kearny had a population of 5,000 and two libraries were built; one for boys and one for girls. On November 3rd, 1871 as part of Hurricane Sandy damage assessment work conducted by the National Weather Service (NWS), all public buildings within five miles of the coast were destroyed or damaged by flooding from Sandy's surgewaters; however some private residences were spared such as Kearny's James Kempton home which still stands today withstood almost 6 feet (1 meter) of water throughout landfalling tidal waves and tides backed up against it resulting in $5 million worth of damage to both homes including $2 million dollars worth of flood insurance claims paid off). On October 22nd 1904 US President Theodore Roosevelt made history when he delivered his final address from the steps of Federal Hall on State Street in downtownPhiladelphia after having served as President for more than six years – using this location he famously called “the great white house” thus establishing Philadelphia as America’s largest city! On July 24 of that year, it annexed parts of Paramus Township which had been part of Westfields since 1915. The annexation made Kearny the third-largest municipality in Bergen County after Paramus and Nutley. The population reached 10,000 during World War II due to wartime housing shortages brought about by the war effort; however this number decreased rapidly following demobilization as many servicemen returned home to their homes or other occupations than working in businesses until they regained their civilian identities. In 1970 Mayor Joe Biden took office after winning an open primary against incumbent Edward Jannucci with over 60% of the vote; he would serve two terms before serving his final term as Vice President under George H W Bush in 2008-09. During Biden's time as mayor there were several significant changes including passage of an ordinance allowing for mixed-use development along Route 20 near Lakehurst Naval Air Station; erection of a new library/museum complex adjacent to Roosevelt High School; renovation and expansion of both JFK Middle School and North Star Catholic High School; establishment of a new park next to Roosevelt High School; construction began on Phase 2 (the “New” Park) which included an indoor track/soccer field/golf course/waterpark; redevelopment began on Elm Street between JFK Middle School and North Star Catholic High school into multi-level housing developments called "The Villages"; construction continued onto Phase 3 (the “Old” Park), which involved demolition of much older infrastructure including most homes across Elm Street between JFKMiddle School & NorthStar Catholic High school while retaining somehistoric architecture such asnyder's gristmill dating backto 1765
