Kearny is a town in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Kearny is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Kearny comes from English settlers who named it for General John Kearny (1746-1824), one of George Washington's generals during the American Revolution. The first settler in what would become Kearny was Jameson Fitzpatrick in 1798. Kearney Township was formed by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 12, 1814, from parts of Middlesex Township and Union Township. It became a borough on October 25, 1834. On March 3, 1849, it merged with Middlesex Borough to form the new township of Kearny. As early as 1798 there were settlements in what would become Kearney township: Fitzpatrick's village (now called East Orange), Purdy's post office (now called North Orange), Beardsley's tavern (now called West Orange), and Storer's farmstead on the east side of Route 1 near present day Livingston Avenue and Turnpike Road. In 1800 John Keegan settled nearby on land that he had purchased from Nicholas Lourie for £150 cash plus 20 pounds sterling worth of goods to be delivered to him every month until his death in 1802; Keegan later sold this land to Moses Higginson for $2 per acre ($40/acre). Other early residents included William Browning and John McCoy who both lived at Fitzpatrick's village before moving to other locations around this time including Springettsbury Township and West Milford Borough where they practiced law together under the name "McCoy & Browning". In 1810 Jacob D'Angelo moved his family from Springettsbury Township into what would become Kearny which at that time consisted only of two houses along Route 1 north of present day McGowan Boulevard; he soon built a larger house located today at 209 McGowan Boulevard which served as home until his death in 1830 aged 90 years old while still living there; also associated with this period were Isaac Davis Sr., Jr., Isaac Davis Sr., III, Nathan Browning and Solomon First sophomore year students at Princeton College who resided at PF Bentley’s store between 1800-1801 when their father took over running that business from his elder brother Nathan Browning after their mother’s death leaving them children ages 8 through 10 years old alone during much of this time although some boarders may have come and gone according to contemporary records.. In 1813 Captain John Childress arrived here with six men after being shipwrecked off Cape May Point while scouting routes for future British attacks off NJ coast - all but one man died including Capt Childress who returned home healthy again Captain Childress landed here about 2 miles due west or so today’s Head Start School property line actually marks point where ocean waves broke upon shore causing most damage - now known as dry docks area just offshore - probably caused by high tide in winter months when water levels are lower however “dry docks” likely refers more specifically to those areas now exposed due Calcareous bedrock outcrops extending almost unto tide mark just offshore making access difficult if not impossible without special equipment . After captaining HMS Orpheus during Long Island Campaign led by Commodore Edward Preble during siege of Pennington HeightsCapt Childress married Elizabeth Atherton sometime prior to mid summerassistant surgeon onboard HMS Cerberus during Third Barbary War . Mrs Atherton was born circa 1795 BT – her parents were Thomas Addison Atherton(died young)and Mary Astor(died young)). About 1850 Capt Childress purchased large piece Lot 7 On Rte 1 just south side track leading down toward waterfront lot corner now known as Atlantic Terminal Rd property line .. Mr Addison leased lot back To Capt Jones about 1860-1870 thruout remainder Of His Life thereby securing title In 1840 William Sweeny bought lot number 6 opposite Post Office From Genl David Humphreys For $500 cash also including land grant adjoining post office .. At same time Daniel Jaffe also bought lots Nos 4 & 5 next door To Wm Sweeny From Nicholas Lourie For $1125 cash also includes grants Obtained From Govt Of NJ For Patents Applied To Cotton Gin & Spinning Wheel .. In late 1840 Five hundred dollars check drawn against Trust Fund Balance Governing The Affairs Of This Town dated Feb 9th 41st proved fullpayment By Wm Sweeny And Daniel Jaffe Both Living Here At That Time.. Kearny, New Jersey is a small town located in the heart of New Jersey. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. Kearny is one of the oldest towns in New Jersey and has been around since 1698. The first settlers to Kearny were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1698. In 1714, they founded a small settlement on the north bank of the Passaic River by naming it after John Kearny, an American Revolutionary War general and delegate from Westchester County, New York. The town was incorporated as a village on November 3, 1853. On December 15, 1862, it became a full township when it merged with neighboring East Orange Township. The name "Kearny" comes from Captain Nicholas Kearney who had served with distinction during the French and Indian War (1755-63). In 1887, Charles Fenton donated land to build what would become the first high school in what is now Kearny Township. The school was built on land that once housed an old sawmill and grist mill which had been condemned as too expensive to renovated and torn down by fire because of its age. Construction began on October 1st of that year and finished just in time for Christmas presents for family members. It opened its doors on December 11th of that year. On February 10th of 1922, Morris Aronowitz donated $10 000 towards construction of a new athletic stadium which would be used for football games between local high schools as well as college teams from nearby Trenton University and Rutgers University (now Princeton). The field was named Aronowitz Stadium after him and his wife Esther Ellman Aronowitz who gave money for it through her foundation known as Esther Aarons Educational Foundation Inc.. The stadium seats 6500 spectators today making it one of the largest stadiums ever built in NJ/PA! It also hosted Super Bowl XVIII which was played between Philadelphia Eagles & Baltimore Colts on January 30th 1982 at 7:30 PM EST before being replaced by MetLife Stadium which currently holds this event!
