On April 15, 1848, the first permanent settler in Kearny was George W. Brown. The town was named after General John Kearny of the Union army who died in action at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 4th,1863. On October 16, 1850, a post office called Kearny was established and remained in operation until 1861. In 1872, a depot and store were built in Kearny by Larkin & Lewis. The town grew rapidly with new settlers arriving every year. By 1886, there were over 100 residents in Kearny. During the early 1900s, barn and other infrastructure were built to support increased population growth; this included a jail and schoolhouse which were completed in 1903-04. In 1907-08, a telephone line was installed between Kearny and Essex Junction making communication possible for businesses within the town as well as those located outside of it In 1916-17, during World War I (1914-18), Kearney received government assistance through the United States war relief program called "War bonds". This allowed for an increase in population due to people enlisted into military service and also supported local businesses that supplied goods to soldiers stationed abroad In 1924-25%, construction began on what is now known as "The Big House" - an apartment building that would become one of the most popular addresses in town During World War II (1939-1945), along with many other towns throughout New Jersey, Kearny experienced significant impact due to its proximity to where Allied forces fought against Nazi Germany After the war ended on September 2nd 1945, much of what had been done with regards to reconstruction came to a standstill as officials struggled to come up with plans for postwar development However by 1951 when incorporation occurred under state law became possible following ratification of The State Constitution of New Jersey The roaring 20's saw new buildings erected; these included several stores and restaurants which helped spur economic development within the community
Kearny is a small town in New Jersey. The population was 9,754 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Pine Barrens, about 25 miles west of Newark. Kearny was founded in 1788 by Captain John Kearny and his men from Boston as a stop on their way to victory over the French at Saratoga. The first settler in what is now Kearny was Nicholas Biddle who came overland from Connecticut in 1786. He built a cabin on the present-day site of downtown Kearny and started trading with local Native Americans. In 1802, Captain John Kearny bought land here from Nicholas Biddle and began to develop it into a village named after him, Kearney Landing. He laid out streets and erected poles for buildings, planting crops and raising livestock until he died in 1809 at age 57. His heirs continued to manage the village until 1863 when it became part of the United States under President Abraham Lincoln as part of that state's Appomattox Treaty settlement following America's Civil War defeat by Confederate forces. After American independence was achieved, Washington County (now Morris County) was established within newly acquired Rutgers University territory east of Princeton, including much of what is now Kearny town limits; so too did Rahway Township within new Hunterdon County (now Union County). In 1868, Washington County annexed most of Rahway Township; thus all residents of Rahway were transferred to Kearny during that same year - except for one or two families who had resided there for centuries before that date. In 1870-71 Washington county also annexed much of Monmouth Borough (now West Egg), giving its entire area to Rutgers; thenceforth all residents were again transferred to Kearny upon its incorporation into the university district). At this time many people living near Center Road/Route 8 then turned back onto their original routes because they no longer knew where they were situated! As more development took place around town center - even extending out into neighboring townships - Route 8 gradually lost its significance as an important transportation artery leading into central city via Interstate 95! Today only a few reminders remain of how things used to be: an old post office building still stands next to State Streetwestbound exit off I 95; and some concrete blocks near Ulysses S Grant Boulevard show where Highway 4 once ran parallel across Center Road just south of Route 8!

Kearny is a borough in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, Kearny had a population of 18,012. The name "Kearny" was derived from the Mohawk word "karella", meaning "place where deerhide is made." The first settler in what is now Kearny was John White and his family who arrived in 1764. In 1814, Captain Amos Slater settled in what is now Kearney and named it after him. He built a small cabin on the site that still stands today as Slater's Cabin. In 1835, James Snetterfield bought land east of present-day Kearny from Colonel Nathaniel Dickson for $2,000 and began to build a home there called Dickson's Grove which still stands today. In 1839, he renamed it KEARNY after his birthplace at Castlereagh near Dublin in Ireland which he had visited while doing business there with fellow Americans Isaac Van Buren and Nicholas Biddle. It wasn't until 1861 when Congress passed the act renaming all U.S. states by their original names when they became state legislatures that KEARNY received its current name of Mercer County (from Philadelphia). The first resident school in what is now Kearney was established in 1796 by Reverend Samuel Morse and taught children betweeners until 1812 when that program was moved to Princeton Township because of funding limitations caused by the War of1812 moratorium implemented by President James K Polk following the Treaty of Ghent that ended the war. In 1850, Methodists started teaching religious education at McKenzie School which eventually merged into Central Union High School located across from present day Rutgers University before becoming Hunterdon Valley Regional High School in 1982; finally reverting to its initial name as Central Union High School again in 2000 due to guidance from Superintendent Driscoll during an identity refresh campaign for all public schools within Mercer County schools district No 2 including Central Union High Schools.). In 1893 when section 10B of Township 12 North became part of newly formed Middlesex Borough upon merger with neighboring East Brunswick Township; however this remained undeveloped until 1903 when developer David Bergman purchased 11 acres north side Willsboro Road across from South Park Elementary School then reorganized portions thereof into two parcels - one comprising 6 acres containing an existing house(now known as Pritchard House) owned/operated by Mrs Lillian Pritchard & her husband Robert Woolridge & one comprising 3 1/2 acres consisting originally onlyof an area designated as West Side Playground & later Additional Site #1 also knownas Spring Garden Farmstead)--this parcel being bounded on the north (west) side now by Spring Garden Road (formerly called Arlington Avenue), on the south (east) side formerly by Willoughby Avenue (&South Park Elementary), with regards to additional Site #1--now known as Wellesley Drive--being approximately triangular shaped lot measuring approximately 50 feet wide x 25 feet deep x 15 feet high.--surrounding boundaries having been redefined numerous times since.--the property remaining undeveloped until 1990 when development commenced along Willsboro Road adjacent Spring Garden Farmstead using Lot #4 situated immediately northeast corner thereof & adjoining Spring Garden Rd.--purchased outright from David Bergman for $145 thousand cash--the ratepayers providing all funding necessary for associated infrastructure including water lines & streetlights etc.--originally naming wellesley drive “David Bergman Way” but changed to its current moniker reflecting development history paralleling route designation
