In Kearny, New Jersey, there have been a number of optical accessories businesses since the early 1800s. In 1851, Ezekiel Poor started a store in what is now known as the Kearny Plaza shopping center. The Poor Optical Shop was one of the first businesses to sell glass lenses and telescopes. From here,Poor began manufacturing and selling other optical devices such as Rayleigh lights and ozonometers. By 1860, he had closed his business but continued to make and sell optical products until his death in 1892. Another early entrepreneur in Kearny was Julius Kappelman who founded the Kappelman Optics Company in 1865. This company manufactured lenses for telescopes and other optically-sensitive equipment. In 1887, Kappelman sold his company to Edwin Semonoff who renamed it Semonoff & Sons (later Semonoff Opticals Inc.). From here, Semonoff produced optics products including contact lenses, eyeglasses, sunglasses, binoculars and microscopes. Kearny also played a role in developing electronic technology with its creation of an electric light plant in 1903 by Abram Weisfeldt which became known as Weisfeldt Electric Corporation. During World War II, Kearney became home to Naval Air Station Earlsboro which produced fighter planes using rayguns developed at the nearby Philadelphia Navy Yard.[1] After the war ended in 1945, many of theserayguns were sold off or scrapped while some were used by NASA during their space programs[2]. Today's oldest optical accessory business is still active with Ezekiel Poor's widow operating the store on Market Street within walking distance of both her son Ezekiel Jr.'s law practice office[3] and local schools[4]. Kearny is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 13,353 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town within Middlesex County by land area. The name Kearny comes from English settlers who named it for Captain John Kearny and his regiment of riflemen in 1777 during the American Revolution. The first Europeans to visit what is now Kearny were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624. In 1632, Rutgers College (now Princeton University) was founded here and by 1638, there were three villages: Ferry Landing (founded by Sir Nicholas Ferdinando Penn), Newark Lakeshore and Newark Southwark. In 1701-04, General James Monmouth landed at Newark Northward with 1,500 men and burned Ferry Landing to prevent its use as a base of operations for attacks on English settlements in America east of Lake George. In 1802 developers took up residence around Ferry Landing after horse-drawn carts became unreliable on the waters near Rahway River due to heavy flooding caused by Hurricane Andrew two years earlier. By 1807 there were 11 buildings in Kearny; 5 taverns/beer gardens and 4 stores/warehouses along Nassau Street between Market Street and Orange Avenue; 2 churches - First Presbyterian (1778) and Second Presbyterian (1810). On October 15th, 1809 Kearny had its incorporation as a borough under the jurisdiction of Passaic County with 3 members chosen from each township or ward within that county which then elected one representative per 100 residents not including freeholders or office holders such as sheriffs or justices of peace. On March 8th 1860 Borough President Isaac Pomeroy resignedeffective immediately because he could no longer support being mayor of an incorporated municipality when only 3% of residents voted against him annually while he received more than half the votes cast throughout all municipalities combined having been mayor since January 1st 1861 when Amherst Township split from Kearney Borough resulting in a gain of 2 seats to make 14 total members out of 19 Borough Presidents elected monthly at large with Mayor casting sole veto over all important matters except special elections which were held concurrently with elections for Borough President which are still conducted today with an election every 6 months instead of every year like they have been for over 150 years! There has never been any desire among our current Borough Presidents to seek re-election making this form of government one I am very proud To be a part Of! There are several notable buildings located around where now Kearney stands including: First Presbyterian Church (built 1778), Nassau Street Warehouse & Tavern(established 1800), Orange Avenue Baptist Church (established 1810), Kapp’s Drug Store(opened 1865), Third Watchtower & Schoolhouse(opened 1865). Many other small businesses dotted throughout these streets opened their doors during this time period including Wernham’s grocery store built 1847 remaining open until 1924 according to family history books; Gildersleeve’s dry goods store built c1900& closed 1971; Maynard Rickshaw Company began business 1901 & continues operation today

Kearny was founded by New Jersey pioneers in 1814. The town was named for Captain John Kearny and his party of soldiers who explored the area in 1810. After he became captain of the 3rd Regiment New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, he traveled throughout the state looking for land to settle. He found what would become Kearny in 1814 and began development of the town. The first settler in Kearny was John Casey, a native of Ireland who arrived in 1815. Other early settlers included Isaac Perkins and James Mercer. In 1830, Major General George Washington authorized construction of a military road from Philadelphia to Morristown through Kearny and other towns on the way to Gettysburg. By 1840, some 400 people lived in Kearny with about 1,000 acres (4 hectares) of land cultivated. During the Civil War, Kearney sided with Confederate States of America (CSA). On November 8, 1861, Union forces overran an encampment near present-day White Sands Beach while they were besieging Fort Mifflin on Long Island Sound. Confederate soldiers inside surrendered without fight, but many more managed to escape via boats or cars before Union troops could capture them. A number of men from Kearny joined up with Confederate forces at this time including Cornelius Vanderbilt II and his brother James Phelan; these men constituted one half of what is now known as "The Vanderbilt Boys." A number of skirmishes took place during the war between Union forces and Confederate units around town though mostfighting occurred outside its wallsvironing approximately 25 miles (40 kilometers) south-southwest from downtown Kearny along Route 22/US 622 between Farmingdale Township and Mayfield Township off County Route 422 eastward into Sussex County In 1865 local resident Israel Putnam donated 2 acres (8 hectares) north-northwest from downtown to be used as a public park which remains today as Camden Park In 1870 a new courthouse was built on Market Street which still stands today
Kearny was first settled in the late 17th century by Loyalists from New York. The village developed around a small mill and post office, which opened in 1784. In 1827, Kearny became part of Middlesex County under the new system of government. The population peaked at over 1,000 in the early 20th century but fell steadily during the Great Depression. It reached its low point in 1951 when only 100 people lived there. Today, Kearny is a small town with a population of around 100 residents.
